Literacy can mean different things to different people, but there is no denying the more common meaning. Jeff Magee, a teacher, said “Literacy is an essential aspect of our everyday lives that is embedded in our activities, social interactions and relationships. It is not only the ability to read and write, but to comprehend.” If you are able to comprehend more, the more successful you can be. Literacy dictates each and everyone’s future for many reasons. If you are able to read, write and comprehend well, you will have far more success in life than someone who cannot do those things as well. Even though all of those are positive impacts, technology, when used constantly can start doing damage to your education life. Students and even parents can easily look past all of the negative things technology can do because we live in such a technological world. It is embedded in us to be up to date with all of the latest video games, computers and phones. Literacy standards are not what they used to be. Calkins and Ehrenworth suggest that in the past “most jobs required low literacy skills, but children who leave school today without strong literacy skills will not find a job” (p. 9). The literacy needed now has gotten a lot harder and you need to be able to comprehend more in this day in age. Students who leave school now without good literacy skills looking for a job, will most likely not find a job. Technology has been tied with students wanting to leave school early to either make Youtube tutorials, video game cheat videos and so on and so forth. With very little literacy skills needed to work in that industry, people don’t think about what happens when you fail. Because they have poor literacy skills, it is very hard to succeed in a real job because literacy is knowledge, knowledge is power and power is
