After waiting for what seemed to be an eternity the loud speaker crackles as the desk agent announces, boarding will begin shortly. Naturally there is a crowd of people waiting at the boarding gate despite their section not being called. Then, the usual first set of customers are allowed to board, eagerly awaiting my zone to be call I stand to the back of some people that I’m not sure if they are waiting for customer service or are in a rush to get on the plane as I am. Finally, “zone one and two can now make their way to the boarding gate.” I maneuver my way through the mass of people, hand over my boarding pass then I’m on the way to the plane. As I walk through the ramp, abruptly in front of me this lady stops, not to the side to allow others to pass but in the middle of the pathway. What is our fascination with having the need to let others know our every action throughout our day? In my essay I will be examining the roots of social media and its purpose, essentially at the end I intend to answer the question, “Does social media do more harm than good?” To proper understand the effect that social media has on us it is important to have a clear and definitive answer as to what constitutes as social media. Social media is a conduit in which users can share various and vast quantities of information on a regular basis. When one hears the term “social media” sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, MySpace and Twitter are some of the common names to come to mind. The fact is, sharing of information in a public setting has been around longer than we realize. Social media refers to the exchange of personal opinions and ideas through an electronic measure.
