Does participation in sports really keep students out of trouble? Studies do show that students that grew up in bad neighborhoods were saved by sports. Also sports keeps teens from having babies at a young age as well as catching diseases. Back in the 80s as well as the 90s thugs were able to play and there was no care in the world about school it was just sports. Even older, graduated people would state that them and all of their friends grades were not up to par and they were still able to play in games. Now the new rule is into effect that if the student does not have above a 2.0 GPA he/she could not participate in any school related sports. Most athletes that were able to make it out of the bad neighborhoods would state,”growing up in Oakland was rough it was sports or the streets.” The football player for the Seattle Seahawks would go on and say that his mom would sometimes worry about him that's why she stayed on top of him when it came to school. Richard Sherman an NFL cornerback that grew up in the gritty streets of Compton stated that his neighborhood saw the potential in him and wouldn't allow him to do bad things. Richard’s father was a gangster that did much wrong but stayed on his son about graduating school and being better than he ever was in life. Richard Sherman would take there advice and earn a scholarship to attend the university of Stanford where he finished his degree with a 3.2 grade point average. In most’s opinion sports are just entertainment. Well they are completely wrong to some, sports is not only their lives.
