(People’s Moral Decisions Based on Their Individual Beliefs)
In today’s society, morals seemed to have lost influential weight on many people. Therefore, this question seems appropriate to ask, does Hell serve as a moral propaedeutic? I also think it depends on what standards each person holds himself or herself to, or the reputation they want to hold, not only in the eyes of those around them, but in their own eyes as well. If someone believes in God, then I believe they’ll fear the idea of Hell, not just Hell itself, but ending up there for eternity once they die. But if someone is an atheist, then clearly the thought of Hell doesn’t phase them on bit. The idea of reincarnation and having to live the same life, decisions, and choices over and over again, although it isn’t the exact same thing as Hell, can serve the same purpose by scaring people into doing the right thing. Hell serves as a moral propaedeutic for those who believe in it, and are afraid to wrong themselves as well as God. Those that believe in reincarnation would not fear Hell in the same way as those who believe in God and Heaven and Hell as the afterlife, but they would fear living a life of bad deeds, pain and sin over and over again because it would be like living in their own personal hell. Atheists would not fear Hell, any type of hell, because they don’t believe in a higher power, so they would have no judgement day to anticipate. I believe that the idea of Hell serving as a reason to behave right or in a moral manner depends on the beliefs and standards of each person
