Problem Statement: Ralph and Jody go to the shop to buy candy bars and potato chips. Ralph buys 3 bags of potato chips and 4 candy bars. The potato chips and candy bars cost 3 dollars and 75 cents for Ralph. Jody buys 4 bags of potato chips and 2 candy bars. The potato chips and candy bars cost 3 dollars for Jody. Later, Clancy asks to buy 1 candy bar and one bag of potato chips from them. How much should he pay? Ralph writes 3p + 4b = 375. If p stands for the cost, in cents, of a bag of potato chips and b stands for the cost, in cents, of a candy bar, what does the 375 in Ralph’s equation mean? Does he have enough money to buy a bag of potato chips and a candy bar? Explain your answer by showing your calculation.

Process: My initial prediction was that 200 cents was 6 bags of potato chips. I started out by writing down the operations and simplifying them and from there I could join the two operations together. I got stuck on the linear equations when I was trying to isolate p. One of my problem solving strategies was looking for relationships with the data I had to uncover the missing information.

Solution:
375 stands for the whole cost meaning 3 bags of potato chips and 4 candy bars in Ralph’s equation.
A similar equation, using p and b, for the items Jody bought is 4p+2b=300.
One bag of potato chips costs 45 cents and one candy bar costs 60 cents.
45+60=105 100-105=-5

RALPH JODY 3p + 4b = 375 4p + 2b = 300

p + 4b/3 = 375/3 p + 2b/4 = 300/4

p + 4b/3 = 125 p + 2b/4 =
