Rationale:
This research originated in the widespread evidence of racism in Australia. The social media is playing an important role in the process of converting traditional guidelines and standards we used in the past to determine group membership, they involved negative stereotypes such as aggressiveness. It is inevitable to study the possible reasons for the racial inequities and discrimination in Australia because the minorities are facing inequities such as danger, harassment and other racist attacks undertaken by “white-thinking” people, especially Muslims and the person who looks like Middle East. The aim of this research proposal is to find the correlation between the usage of social networking site and the perceptions of racism, and examines the representation of minorities on the social networking site, and how the misrepresentation can be led to the growth of a ‘racism’. This research refers to the sociological theoretical context of group identity and self-identity studies.
