Trophies used to be unique awards. They used to be given to children who achieved exceptional accomplishments at special occasions. Nowadays, trophies are given to every child for only participation on sport or extracurricular activities. A lot of money is spent every year on trophies and prizes that are given to every kid on the team. “Nationally, A.Y.S.O. local branches typically spend as much as 12 percent of their yearly budgets on trophies, whose industry is estimated $3 billion-a-year in the United States and Canada”(Merryman). Some people argue that giving a ward to every participant child may help him or her to build self-confident and feel that he or she is part of the team. The upcoming generations can have more self-admiration and privilege. A study has showed that there are recent increases in narcissism and entitlement among college students (Merryman). The message that has been sent to children whose rooms are filled with participation trophies is to succeed you just have to show up. Then when they go to college, they will face the fact that they will not get an A for just being in class every time. Another fact they will face is at work; they will realize that showing up every day at work cannot get them promotion. For both cases, they need to be learned how the real compaction in life should be. The bottom line is if children are grown up with the mentality of doing the minimum requirements, they are less likely to succeed at education or get promotion at occupation.
