Does Black Lives Matter

As I watch the news and see how the black people of America talk about how “Black Lives Matter”, it breaks my heart. I can’t believe how far we have fallen from. Yes, as a black woman, living in America, I do at times fear for my life when I am stopped by a police officer these days, but I’m not alone. I do feel like that black lives matter but I also feel that all lives matter. I feel that it is not just blacks (African Americans) that are being mistreated and killed for no reason. There have been a few cases where other races have been treated unfairly and killed because they were different or just hate crimes in general. I sit here and wonder what happen to the values that this country was founding on. Have we really forgotten what our Declaration …show more content…
(Donald, 2016) This was according to The Washington Post’s ongoing database of fatal police shootings. (Donald, 2016) Those ratios were also similar to last year’s recording, in which whites made up 50% of the 987 fatal police shootings, and blacks were 26%. (Donald, 2016) So from what I can see here, is that black Americans are not at the top but the white Americans. I feel that because of how and what the media tells us about the police killings in America, is how this came about. People fail to realize that media doesn’t always give us the whole story. I wonder if the media ever spoke about all those others’ lives of innocent peoples that was taken by police. Here is something else I found out. “In the U.S. a total of 509 citizens have been killed this year alone by police. The body count for the previous year stands at a grand total of 990 people shot dead, according to the Washington Post. As the below infographic from Statista shows, most of those killed by police are male and white. 123 of those shot were Black Americans. This is a relatively high share, keeping in mind that close to 13 percent of Americans belong to that ethnic group. ” (Spec, 2016) Below are a few graphs that will show you the results found: (Spec, 2016) So I this why I feel that it’s not just black Americans lives that matter but …show more content…
For many years now homosexuals have been scrutinized by society because who they chose to love and how they chose to live their lives. Till this day there are many homosexuals that are afraid to come out because they fear how they will be treated by family, friends, and the people around them. It has been said that nearly a fifth of the 5,462 so-called single-bias hate crimes reported to the F.B.I. in 2014 were because of the target’s sexual orientation, or, in some cases, their perceived orientation. (Park & Mykhyalyshyn, 2016) To be honest, I feel like that the increase of hate crimes against homosexuals is because of the increase of people who are accepting them for who they are. Even though there are more people that are accepting in the society, they still have issues of being denied the same rights of everyone else. To me it doesn’t make any sense. They are people just like everyone else. They bleed, cry, love, and hurt like everyone else. Their lives matter just like everyone else’s. What makes them so

According to the article of 'All Lives Matter' vs. Black Lives Matter by Gordon Marino, he states that ‘Black Lives Matter started after the case of Trayvon Martin in 2013 and it creates a debate after that incident. He shows people’s perceptions about this issue. Gordon asserts Ben Carson’s perspective: "The Black Lives Matter movement is focused on the wrong targets, to the detriment of blacks who would like to see real change. " On the other hand, Rand Paul says: “I think they should change their name maybe--if they were All Lives Matter, or Innocent Lives Matter."…

For my closing assignment for my African American Experience class, I have to write an essay that elaborates on a black organization in the United States. To make that essay an argument over evaluation essay I have to undergo three stages. The first is the purpose of my evaluation. The second is about the criteria that I have to establish for the purpose of judging, what makes it good or bad. The last one is using evidence matching the criteria and to make it engaging and persuasive.…

We have seen this before: the wanton killing of Black people by police. The historical record is replete over four centuries and well into the early 21st century. Black lives do not matter in the United States of America because they do not. They have never mattered. The current economic obsolescence of Black people has been in the making over the last 40 years with the dislocation and shifts in the industrial base of the U.S. economy.…

population” (Lowery). Technically, white people get killed by the police more than black people. The fact that white people’s population goes way deeper in the US than African Americans, it is taken the other way around. It still isn’t an okay thing for black people to get killed from left to right just because there is not much black people. In an article, In Case You Forgot, Cops Are Still Killing Black People by Michael Harriot, he points out seven people that have been killed in 2017 and everything is being ignored ( Harriot, In Case You Forgot).…

The black lives matter page is very overwhelming. I find the black on the yellow to the random slide that is red to be mind-boggling. The first picture you see when you click on the about page, you see an image inside the off-setting black and yellow box. The image shows a dark colored man in a black hoodie holding up a dandelion in a protesting fashion. Some of the seeds of the dandelions are flying away.…

An act of civil disobedience by definition, “hopes to set a moral example that will provoke the majority or the government into effecting meaningful political, social, or economic change,” (Encyclopædia Britannica 2015). Similarly, this is a method that the social movement, Black Lives Matter, has recently been known to practice. This is a new age of civil disobedience; the Black Lives Matters movement mixes social media with less contemporary means of civil disobedience. Black Lives Matter started off as a simple hash-tag on social media after an unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin, was shot and killed by police officer George Zimmerman.…

Yes, but No,” by Wesley Lowery, Lowery argues that the ration of black-to-whites killed by police brutality is greater in the blacks end. He claims that there is the greater amount of death of blacks amongst the black population because of police brutality then the amount of white deaths in a white population. He develops this claim by first noting that the despite more white deaths from police brutality compared to black deaths, there is 160 million more white people then black people in the US, which results in the difference in rates of death via police brutality. He explains how black Americans were 2.5 times more likely to be shot and killed by police in comparison to whites. Finally, statistics were used to compare the amount of unarmed victims from both races that police have shot and killed, showing that the percentages of blacks from a black population is greater compared to their white…

Statistics show that cops killed twice as many white people as they did black people in 2015. There has been so much chaos going on about the “Black Lives Matter” movement and it is undoubtedly starting to get out of hand. I, myself, do not agree with any of the uproar due to the fact that we have soldiers dying for our citizens to have equal rights and there are multiple black people kneeling during the National Anthem, random cops getting shot, and rather than uniting America, it is only further dividing the races within our country in many ways. First off, we have many young adults enlisting in the army and others with family members putting their lives on the line. We also come by African Americans who take a knee during sporting events while the National Anthem is played to protest against “racism” in our country.…

When we say black lives matter, we say this because the nation has a tendency to say otherwise. We say black lives matter to remind our demoralized society that all lives matter, which creates a focus. Historically, we as African Americans have never had the same value as other lives based on the circumstances we have been through; colonization, slavery, imposition of religion, educational disparity, and better yet; institutionalized racism. We were rich, but we have been robbed all of our lives. They took our heritage, white washed it, and claimed it as their own.…

Hinds wrote, "Between 1960 and 1968 police killed 1,188 black males and 1,253 white males in a population in which about ten percent were black. The rates of homicides due to police intervention increased over the years of both whites and blacks, but remained consistently at least nine times higher for blacks for the past 18 years." After learning this, it seems that race does contribute to police brutality being an issue. In recent years, the media has brought a more widespread awareness to the severity and frequency of incidences that occur involving police brutality. The act of law enforcement members mistreating minorities—specifically African American members of society—has commonly been mocked, and normalized.…

Famous journalist, Hendrik Hertzberg, states, “Marriage should be between a spouse and a spouse, not a gender and a gender.” This quote speaks volumes because it makes it clear to people that marriage should not be affected on what gender you are, but should just depend on two people who love each other. Gay marriage has been a controversial topic ever since the LGBT community confronted society about their rights as an individual. Even though same-sex marriage was officially made legal across all 50 states since June 26, 2015, same- sex couples and rights activists have felt the discrimination they always have, if not worse (Steverman). Even though it is officially legal for same-sex couples to get married, not everyone agrees with this statement.…
