Does Animal Experimentation Meet Ethical Standards?

Improved Essays
Over the years, animal experimentation has been an ongoing debate about whether the procedures meet ethical standards. Animal experimentation is the use of living animals for research purposes to assess the effectiveness of new medicine and consumer products. Animal testing is used towards enhancing products such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food additives, and household cleaners so that toxic encounters do not occur. Animals that are involved in experimental testing experience psychological distress, extensive pain, and suffering. The animals can either be re-used or killed at the end of an experiment. Animals cannot be re-used for convenience or cost saving benefits. An invasive procedure on a single animal can only be conducted once, however minor procedures can be performed more than once. Animal experimentation is a controversial topic worldwide due to the various positive and negative outcomes that the testing provides. …show more content…
An advantage of animal testing is the contribution to life saving cures and treatments. Other benefits include healthier lives, safer drugs, and the prevention of human experimentation. A major disadvantage of animal testing is the level of cruelty that an animal forcibly receives. Other negative aspects are the disregard towards alternative testing methods and costly procedures. The statistic that "95% of animals used in experiments are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act" is also another disadvantage (procon.org). Even though animal experimentation is beneficial to global advances, some people strongly support the protection of animal

Roughly twenty-six million animals are used for different types of testing in the United States every year (Animal Testing - Procon.org). These tests range from developing medical treatments, determining the toxicity of medications, checking the safety of products that will be used by humans, to healthcare and commercial uses (Animal Testing - Procon.org). Proponents to animal research and testing back their views up with the fact that there are laws in place to prevent the mistreatment of animals, such as the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) (Animal Testing - Procon.org). The Animal Welfare Act defines an animal as, “any live or dead dog, cat, monkey, guinea pig, hamster, rabbit, or such other warm blooded animal.” (Animal Testing - Procon.org).…

For most people there are two scenarios that come to mind when they hear animal testing. The first scenario is that scientist are torturing, neglecting and abusing the animals that are being tested on. The other scenario is that scientist are being ethical, take care of the animals and are creating life-saving medicines. This makes the use of animals in experiments a controversial topic; a topic that isn’t quite black and white when argued. There are different types of animal testing like, medical testing and cosmetic testing; one is more ethical than the other.…

Oliveira 1 Animals should not be used for scientific or commercial testing because animal testing is cruel and inhumane, alternate testing methods are available, and because humans and animals are every different from each other making animals very poor test subjects. Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC (Animal Testing Pro & Con). Scientist use animals for many different purposes. Animals are used to test the effectiveness and safety of new drugs before those drugs are given to people to treat illness and disease. Animals can also be used as test subjects for products like lipstick, eyeshadow, contact lens solution, and shampoo (Hayhurst, 26).…

Animal experimentation is a scientific experiment conducted on animals in laboratories to create human products such as cosmetics, household items, and medications. Around 35 million animals are used around the world for animal experimentation annually. The animals used are kept in confined spaces under close view and control of the scientist. This allows for them to test multiple variables on the animal without any loss of control. Animal experimentation may include exposure to radiation, surgical removal of organs, or injections of toxins for the purpose of a reaction to hazardous contents in a product.…

Animal Experimentation Animal experimentation has been around for many centuries. Humans perform these experiments on all species of animals to find different effect of a product it could have on a human. Three advantages in particular advantages are, it helps scientists gain a better understanding for cures of different diseases, this practice makes a vital advance in medicine, and for the expense of treatments and cures animals should not have rights when it comes to research. Although there are many advantages to animal experimentation, there are also disadvantages which include, there is no benefit for the humans, it is cruel, and is dangerous for humans to be treated only after a trial on animals. Although animal experimentation has provided many benefits, there are alternatives to test toxic substances that may eliminate the cruel use of animals in research. The United States, along with many other countries, have turned to the use of animals in research labs to test human products for hazardous substances. According to the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal, the United States uses about 12 million animals every year making it the biggest conductor of animal experimentation in the world. Scientists and many companies believe that testing their products on animals save humans from being harmed if the product is toxic. However, no matter what the benefits of animal experimentation are, the tests conducted on the animals are cruel.…

After studying multiple views on animal testing I have come to realize my personal view has now changed since the start of my research. Before undergoing heavy study into animal testing I believed that all types of animal testing should be stopped, but now I believe that the idea is very beneficial and should only be done when the rights of the animal are considered. In the coming years, hopefully, more regulations can be passed to ensure that all animal’s lives are protected during experimentation. Although most animals are treated with care and no pain is dealt to them when undergoing testing, it would be a lie if I stated no animals are harmed during the process. Animal testing is extremely useful in developing life-saving drugs and medicine.…

The animals that are experimented on are mostly mammals as well. This means that animals such as dogs, cats, and other mammals are also infected everyday with the same diseases that affect us humans. What I mean is that since our anatomy is very similar to that of other animals, the medicine we create from animal testing can also benefit the animals themselves. So in reality, the benefits of animal experimentation actually far outweigh the consequences because it helps us, and it also helps the animals in the long run because we can treat them as well. It is proven that many veterinary medicines are the same as the medicine we receive from our doctors.…
