In my early days at school, I thought I wasn’t good enough. My k-12 teachers said that I had a learning disability that I had to take extra time to do class assignment and homework assignments. However, since starting at South Seattle College I notice I begun to achieve my educational goals. I have begun to understand how the American educational system works. As a Pacific Islander (PI.) commissioner in the Cultural Center (CC), also known as the Diversity of Retention at South Seattle College (SSC), I’ve learned different aspects about Human Rights at school. After the film the Coordinator and the Commissioners reflected on the film and how the Cultural Center could impact the campus in the same vein as the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. I decided it was necessary to look-up the “Selma” march of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Right Movement. Barack Obama attend to supporting the racial campaign and he mentions "We gather here to honor the courage of ordinary Americans willing to endure Billy clubs and the chastening rod; tear gas and the trampling hoof; men and women who despite the gush of blood and splintered bone would stay true to their North Star and keep marching toward justice," Obama said (Jaffe 2). As they stood up and march across the city for The Civil Rights opposing the state’s flaws that sought to change them. This article was powerful, marching for a change in the nation to live up the dreams for possibility. This film and reading had open-up my experiences to make a change.
It reminds me about the event about the “Know Your Rights Training” was about educating students on campus and the community on their constitutional rights when interacting and dealing with law enforcement. The Cultural Center invited the organization Youth Undoing Institutional Racism to facilitate the workshop and discussion afterwards. Students had a discussion about sexism and racism awareness. The students enjoyed the event and thought that the conversation was thought provoking and helpful for them. These workshops and participations can encourage the student body, the school, and the
