The team, because of conceptual blocks, failed to properly define the scope and severity of the fire as it shifted. Because they failed to properly define it, the efficacy of each subsequent step was affected, culminating in the fatal decision by most of the team members to implement a solution that ultimately cost them their lives.
Dodge, who was the most experienced on the team, thought innovatively and intuitively and understood the gravity of the situation, although he does not appear to have communicated that effectively to his team. His decision to create an area that the fire would not burn through again, that they could pass through safely, was borne out of sifting and processing many pieces of information through his mind in a matter
