After 2 years, he was transferred to New York City. Here, Hanssen didn’t like the attitude of other FBI agents, and was struggling to meet ends every month. He decided to use his position in the FBI to his advantage. Hanssen approached KGB agents, in return for money. Hanssen, was caught counting money he received from the KGB by his wife in the basement. Instead of alerting the authorities, she told him to confess his actions to an Opus Dei priest. “The priest instructed him to give up his activities and to donate the money he received to Mother Theresa’s charities.”(Ibid) Hanssen agreed, and stopped spying for several years.
Hanssen knew “that the FBI was not conducting surveillance on Victor Degtyar, a KGB Colonel living in Alexandria, Virginia.
