Analysis Of Procopius Secret History

Document analysis is a very important method in historical interpretation. In this paper I will analyze four readings and discuss the motivation, intent, and purpose of each document within a specific historical context while focusing on author bias as well as the value of the document itself. The four historical documents that will be analyzed are as followed; “Perpetua’s Diary”, “Procopius’ Secret History”, “The Women from the Suras”, and “Pact of Kumar”. The first document, “Perpetua’s Diary”, is a section from a prison diary kept by a young woman, Vibia Perpetua, martyred in Carthage around the time of 202 or 203 CE. Being a diary entry and written in first person, the author of this document was Perpetua herself. She was a young woman, …show more content…
The document was a chronicle of events written by Procopius, a historian close Justinian the Emperor of Byzantium, he worked for him and was also an official in his court. Procopius wrote the history of Justinian’s reign but in a rather harsh way. This account was written as a, like the title states, “secret history”, and was written for posterity so that everyone will know the ‘real’ account of his reign; the good, the bad, and the ugly. Through Procopius’ viewpoint, Justinian was never truthful, a treacherous enemy, hypocritical faithless, and nothing more than average (Procopius’ Secret History”). Whereas Procopius, who comes from a rich family, is a Roman aristocrat and feels as if he is higher class than Justinian. Although there is clear author bias and the reader is only getting the viewpoint of Justinian through a workers eyes, the pros of analyzing and reading documents such as this one can help us understand the covered lies about historic emperors and leaders. We mainly get the positives about leaders but Procopius was very truthful in his words and went on to discuss the downfalls of Justinian’s rule. He discusses howJustinian was the cause of poverty, how he abolished religious beliefs and replaced them with an orthodox dogma, executed if people did not convert, and so on (“Procopius’ Secret History”). This document helps the reader analyze and …show more content…
When analyzing, I took into account the value behind each document and how it contributes to our knowledge of the world at the time it was written. By doing so, I was able to understand more clearly why these events happened and the purpose for passing the information down to other generations and releasing it to the public (in reference to the diary document and the secret history account). By analyzing these documents I was able to connect ways in which our society and culture still act in such fashions and are influenced by similar factors and also how they differs from those expressed in the

What is more illuminating is that way she weaves the story of the men in Neaira’s life using the judicial system for political and personal gain (Hamel, 155). This speaks a lot about the Greek political system, because when one thinks of Greek politics a fair and just system comes to mind. Yet this abuse of the court system for personal or political gain happened all too often and usually, like this case, consisted of outlandish accusations used to harm an opponent with the scandalous…

Within the past century, the standards of gender roles have taken a turn in many aspects. For instance, women are no longer just caretakers of children or homes, but are now more independent and have taken on the “male role” of working and receiving an income. Years ago, women changed the norms for their gender, just as Perpetua had for herself in her era. My main argument is that Perpetua in fact transcended her feminine roles and her gender did not impact her martyrdom. Throughout the variations of her life, Perpetua slowly became less of the typical daughter, mother, or wife and more of a freely spirited follower of God.…

The translated texts of the inscriptions concerning the reign of Darius, King of Persia, from Behistun and Naqs gives insight into how Darius perceived his own claim to the throne and his actions throughout his reign. In contrast, excerpts from book three of Herodotus’s Histories provides an outside and reflective view of the reign of Darius. Although there are several similar aspects in their narratives, Darius and Herodotus present differing views on Darius’s claim to the throne and what the king accomplished throughout his reign. Darius supports his claim to the throne by tracking his lineage all the way back to Achaemenes, his family's namesake. He then goes on the say that he is the ninth of the line of Achaemenes to be king, although…

Byzantine was an empire lost to the void of time, its memory wiped from minds of all. Lars Brownworth, an established author, tried to do justice to the book and offer a voice to the ones drowned out by the pages of history. He told the stories of a great empire that served as a ground of rebirth for a crumbling Rome, rescuing it from a certain doom, in an attempt to expose one to the history of Byzantine vast enough to rival the lands of the empire during the reign of Justinian. The author pieces together the East and West, Byzantium and Rome, in an artful masterpiece as one would expect from someone who has as much distinguished work and experience as him. Mr. Brownworth was once a history teacher, and thus knows how to teach history in a way that captivates students or readers of any age.…

This work gives us an idea of what Justinian and Theodora might actually have been like, while giving us an insight to how Procopius could have been treated and his feelings towards the royal couple. Given that Procopius waited to write this piece until Justinian had died, we can assume that he was afraid of Justinian and what kind of backlash may occur if he wrote this piece at a time where Justinian could read it. The title in itself, ‘The Secret History” is representative how Procopius felt about Justinian and Theodora. This is a historical piece meant to give information about the past to different readers, and attaching the word secret in to title indicates that this history was meant to be kept private until the objects of the piece could no longer be involved.…

Herodotus and Thucydides are the first Greek historians credited for documenting history. Not only are Herodotus and Thucydides credited for writing the first accounts of ancient Greek history, but they each shaped the future of historical writing in their own unique ways. The Peloponnesian and Persian wars were both important conflicts that focused on independence. Herodotus earned the designation “The Father of History” because before his writings, the Greeks had no word for history in terms of writing a narration of past events in prose.…

In reviewing and arranging the judicial literature, the commissioners discovered that many problems had been highly controversial among the past legal experts and remained so for centuries. Furthermore, Another disadvantage which the Corpus Juris Civilis faced was that there were various textbooks not just one and Justinian’s aim was to preserve all the relevant information in just one text book. It can be argued also that the Corpus Juris Civilis represents only one phase of the Roman era and so there is still a lot of unknown information. In connection to this one can also argue that when the Corpus Juris Civilis was established all the other previous sources were lost, it reduced the great amount of material which had been gathered, all the previous legislation and works of authors became obsolete. They had no relevance to the law because the corpus juris civilis was the essential tool box for all legal practitioners.…
