Doctors prescribe insulin injections when type 1 diabetes is diagnosed. The injections provide the body with the insulin that the pancreas is no longer producing. So, for the rest of one’s life, one has to balance the insulin one injects, one’s diet, and exercise one gets.
There is no cause for type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease is when the body’s immune system accidently attacks part of oneself. Most people who have type 1 diabetes have a high level of autoantibodies. Antibodies are proteins that one’s body creates to destroy bacteria or viruses. Autoantibodies attack one’s own body own tissues. So in people with type 1 diabetes, autoantibodies may attack the cells in the pancreas that create insulin.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. “Most of the cases of diabetes-as many as 90 percent-are type 2 diabetes” (Diabetes 7). Type 2 diabetes is similar to type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a disease of high blood sugar, like type 1 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes are usually overweight and physically inactive. Type 2 diabetes mainly appears in adults forty years old and older. Although, over the past decade more and more young people have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Medical experts believe, “the increase has been caused by overweight; high-fat, sugary diets and lack of exercise in young people” (Allman 18).
