Did you know in the Civil war doctors were not regulated? Well for all that didn't know, now you do and in this article you will learn more about just what the doctors did. In the Union(North) they only had 98 registered doctors. If you think that is a small number just wait until you hear the south. The Confederacy only had 24 registered doctors. Both countries would be more than happy to accept anyone that would be willing to be a physician. If a country got a new doctor they would not train them, they would send him/her straight to work. They would go off a book written by Dr.Samuel Gress. I mean who would want a doctor waiting on them who has to go off a manual! I know I wouldn’t! The doctors training was very brief and was straight to the point. All the surgeons wore was a apporn and they dug with their fingers! The surgeons did not wash their hands after every patient, because they didn’t know what germs did or what they even were. Think of how many germs were spreading from body to body!

It a very painful illness. This was the #1 killer disease in the Civil War. Soldiers that had Dysentery may have gone through a vary of symptoms. Stomach pains, fevers, chills, nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, which can contain blood, mucus or pus, fatigue, or and constipation. Most likely it is a mild stomach ache and diarrhea. It normally lasts 1-3 days. Most cases of Dysentery is just mild and not worth going to the doctor, but back then they didn't know how to treat it. Intently, the infected soldier would visit the restroom very often for diarrhea. In most cases this disease is caused by poor hygiene.
