Doctors Academy Reflection

Decent Essays
The Doctors Academy program has positively impacted me, and has changed how I view the medical field. By being part of the Doctors Academy program I was able to give back to my community. While being part of this program I was able to participate and volunteer at the 2016 UCSF Doctors Academy Alumni gathering event. This gathering event was an amazing experience because I was able to coordinate with all the DA alumni and got a lot of useful advice.
However, I would consider interning and volunteering over the summer as my biggest contribution to the Doctors Academy program, because it didn't just help me build experience, but it allowed me to better serve my community. Especially by completing my research project and then being able to educate

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

With HOSA, I went out to different nursing homes conversing with patients and throwing them holiday parties. Furthermore, I participated in many different charitable efforts, such as raising money for Cystic Fibrosis, listening to the stories of patients and learning about their interactions with physicians. Through these experiences, I learned more about the different struggles patients and healthcare providers go through. As I began college, I continued my volunteer work in healthcare, volunteering at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital. According to the official National Honor Society website, NHS serves to “not only recognize students for their accomplishments, but challenge them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.” The paragraph goes on to describe how the students in NHS ideally strive to achieve “excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.” As an individual hoping to become a member of the society, I interpret this to mean that when one enters NHS, they are not granted the freedom to then be lazy with their grades or lax with their leadership simply because they were deemed suitable for the society at one point. Rather, as a member of the National Honor Society, one becomes a leader on campus and a model of character, while continuing to offer constructivity and inspiration to their community and peers.…

Getting help to make it into medical school is not the only reason I want to join now. I feel like the aspect of family and just knowing I will have brothers and sisters by my side, if I ever need them, is a relief. I know that becoming a doctor is a long and extremely difficult road trip, but with them as my guide, their support and motivation is what I’ll mostly need. Being able to make a difference in this world and not just helping the sick, but really connecting with them is something that’s going to affect both physicians and their patients in a positive way. What this fraternity does for the Children’s Miracle Network has blown my mind away because every penny they raise they send it out to them.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need.
