The comic, Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibson, employs a reoccurring symbol of a smiley face stained with blood covering its left eye. This reoccurrence of the symbol suggests that there is more to it than what the eye meets. It is such a simple symbol that shows happiness, yet is presented in such a convoluted manner in the comic. The smiley face in Watchmen is used ironically throughout the text to show how the characters, and perhaps all humans try to overlook or falsify violence, reality, and immorality, and further shows that these characteristics can’t be covered up. Additionally, the symbol suggests that we live in a pretense world where we try to find happiness, by ultimately happiness is unobtainable because there will always…

In this passage the sheer size of Eckleburg’s eyes, and the fact that they are in “spectacles” gives them the quality of being watchful. However later in the passage Fitzgerald references the occultist sinking “into eternal blindness”. He then goes on to say that the eyes, although “dimmed by many paintless days” remain in their place. The way that the eyes have continued to stare out into the world long after they have been forsaken by mankind gives them the feeling of being an eternal presence. Their weathered quality makes the eyes, at the same time, feel all the more permanent, but also that they have a limit to their power.…

Initially, it is there to represent the workings of Alan’s mind, but becomes key in Dysart’s now steadily growing awakening in the beginning of Act Two where he refers to poking a torch in, a metaphor of Dysart’s own exploration of his inner mind and eventually, his awakening. Shaffer’s use of the symbolic representation of eyes is key to the text, as they will often represent the importance of truth. Symbolism, particularly that of masks and eyes, reappears throughout the text representing the importance of truth. The connection between truth and eyes was initiated first by Alan’s mother, that ‘God's got eyes everywhere’ and will see all things. This connection between the eyes and seeing the truth is what…
