Why Are Pitbulls Misunderstood

Why Are Pitbulls so Misunderstood? What do you see when you look at a Pitbull? Do you see a lovable dog that we dress up like any other pet? Or maybe a very built dog that has a lot of muscle? Or maybe, just maybe, a dog that some people use as a bait dog, breeding dog, or a fighter? The question is why are Pitbulls so misunderstood? Pitbulls are considered a “bully” breed because people can only understand what they see on TV or what they hear “through the grapevine” or what they read. Many people see ads about the humane society pulling dogs away from breeders and people who host dog fights, but what they do not see is the fear and loneliness and the heartbreak in the dog's eyes. Consequently, Pitbulls are the ones that people see in TV shows that get into fights and the ones portrayed as the “vicious” dog. Sometimes we try to stay away from them and avoid getting a Pitbull as a pet. Pitbulls are meant to be loved not hated. Let's take a look back in history. The first dog to be misunderstood is the Doberman Pinscher. Doberman Pinschers were used as “tough” dogs for drug lords. Throughout the 70’s, …show more content…
Pit Bulls, like most breeds, are misunderstood because of how social media presents them. We often wonder why so many dogs are put into pounds and are often mistreated. We put the dogs through so much and we do not see the pain, suffering, and heartbreak we cause. We are the cause for dogs being thrown on the street; we are the ones leaving them in the house or leave them to starve or eat harmful substances. When you look at a dog, what do you see? Do you see a piece of property? Do you see a thing that should be abused? Or do you see a human being that cannot talk, is abused, is put through pain for our enjoyment, is treated like a slave, in the eyes of a dog? Next time you see a dog, do not look at it like anything that we treat like a piece of property; look at it like an animal that needs love, care,

Pit Bulls Should Not Be Banned Pit bulls are often called violent dogs. They are stigmatized as the breed often known as fighting dogs. These dogs are singled out to be restrained or banned and are put to death just for their breed. In Lafayette, Louisiana, two men were arrested for dog fighting and fifty-seven pit bulls were confiscated. Some of the confiscated dogs had scars from fighting, and just because of the breed’s reputation, all of the dogs were considered dangerous.…

He speaks about those flaws of pit bulls, but that behavior is based back on how the previous owners handled the dog. He speaks about his pit bull attacking another dog, and then as a natural instinct it bit the owner of the other dog. Tom was confused as most dog owners would be to see this random behavior out of their animal. He was looking back on the past history with his pit bull Dexter, noticing two abandonments and not great previous owners. Dexter was never taught the proper way to behave, so in an encounter with another dog he acted the way most dogs would without any behavior skills (Jonod…

The segregation of humans was a problem that has only in the few hundred years actually been solved; however, now the segregation is not among us humans but rather, through dogs. The pit-bull breed, like any breed was bred for ‘…different jobs over centuries…(Enos 3)’ and as ‘…family companions…(Enos 3).’ Though, in recent years, pit bulls that had once been thrown into rings to kill one another were now being adopted out to families in order to help shelters make room for more dogs in need. Pit bulls, having the image of being aggressive and potentially dangerous, caused some states and counties to bring the laws known as the BSL or breed-specific legislation to take place. While recently looking up Canadian laws, Animal Rights popped up and seemed very intriguing. From thereon, the Dog Owners Liability Act surfaced and it states “The owner of a dog is liable for damages resulting from a bite or attack by the dog on another person or domestic animal.” This law does make sense that the owner should take the responsibility of their dog because they were the ones who raised the dog to be the way it is but the one sub issue found with this law is the Pit Bull Ban. The total ban on the Pit Bull breed in Ontario is unacceptable because the government shouldn’t be targeting just the one breed because of the actions of several individual dogs, Pit Bulls shouldn’t be treated differently from other breeds, and if the government is already banning a whole breed, what is going to stop them from banning a bunch of other breeds that have the same attack numbers. Throughout this essay, it will be proven that the total ban of Pit Bulls is ridiculous and the law should be revoked.…

Even if the shelter does decide to continue to not adopt out Pit Bulls, there are other options than euthanization. For instance, there are numerous rescue centers that will take in dogs deemed ‘vicious,’ like Pits Bulls, to keep them from being killed. One of these rescue centers is located in North Carolina. Fortitudine Vincimus Rescue Center, also known as “The Fort” was founded by Jake Gardner in 2012. According to Judi Brinegar’s article (2014), “Pit Bull Rescue Seeks Help,” “The Fort" is a nonprofit, no-kill rescue dedicated to alleviating the suffering of all animals, in particular the American Pit Bull Terrier”(Brinegar, para. 2).…

There are many people that believe the myths that are out in the world about Pit Bulls but will never actually do any research to dig deeper to learn about them. If these dogs were so vicious we wouldn’t be using them as service dogs or even as police dogs. People are a reason Pit Bulls are seen as vicious people teach them to be like that, We also have people that own apartment complexes or even people that own deed restricting housing think Pitbulls are very bad and we can’t even get insurance on our dogs if we have Pitbulls so if something were to happen and a Pitbull bit another dog they would have to pay money out of there pocket if there was any injuries and in the end they would have to put that Pitbull down because of that. Just because there has been a small number of pit bull attacks on humans doesn’t mean that pit bulls should be banned, it means that there should be laws and restrictions for those who own them. There can be changes made to the way that pit bulls are handled and at the same time only experienced and responsible owners should be allowed to handle these loving, but determined dogs. The name “pit bull” is not a breed of dog: it is a classification of several breeds of dogs that include the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American…

Most myths regarding pit bulls are based in fear, and almost all of them are proven fallacies. Pit bulls are not the only breed of dog that can have negative, aggressive tendencies based on its upbringing and other circumstances, but certainly an attack on an animal or a person by a pit bull is much more likely to be reported on the news, resulting in the creation of a bad reputation for pit bulls everywhere. Unfortunately, it is this belief that has caused some areas to put out bans on the entire breed. Not until people realize that any animal, even a pit bull, can be a very gentle, kind-hearted partner for life simply by raising the animal in the correct way, will pit bulls finally be rid of the negative and unfair reputation surrounding their…

Pitbulls are very loyal dogs their good with children, they love humans, and are even used as service dogs to help those with disabilities and the media doesn 't portray this part about pit bulls. What the media targets are only things that would come to a shock or surprise to the society and the problem with this is that the media is not always correct about they say because they focus on one side of the story and what they see, what they leave out is cause of the situation or the background of it. For example, according to the article “ The Pit bull Placebo” “ In the 1970s the practice of dog fighting was becoming more aware to the public and in 1976 a californian boy was killed by a dog that was described to be a Bulldog, Bull terrier,…

Don’t Bully My Breed “Don’t bully my breed” is a rallying cry currently being used by animal rights activist to advocate for the end of breed discrimination against Pit Bulls and pit bull types. It is critical to understand what a Pit Bull is and what a pit bull type may be. Pit Bulls are known by two official breed names, the American Pit Bull Terrier or APBT, and as the American Staffordshire Terrier or Amstaff. These dogs are described in the Original Dog Bible as medium build dogs that are slightly longer than tall, wedge shaped head, muscular build and with a deep powerful muzzle. It goes on to say the dogs should range from seventeen to twenty-two inches in height and weigh thirty-five to eighty pounds (Mehus-Roe325-326).…
