Do You Speak Big Brothers Language?
“War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” 1984 (Orwell 51). Words. An official slogan. Three sentences. Contradictory statements. Words that take control. Letters turn into words and these words turn into a language. Positive or negative, words can have a great impact on a person’s physical and mental state. As George Orwell depicts so vividly in his novel 1984, constant pressure from “Big Brother” can cause even the craziest contradictories to become policy and norm. In order to sustain a totalitarian reign in 1984, language control stops any attempts to conceptualize ideas that could hinder absolute control by the government.
One way Big Brother is able to insure total control is by enforcing newspeak. Because oldspeak, or typical English, provides people with words that could form a rebellious attitude towards the government, they sought out to completely change the language available. Newspeak is the adaptation they implement to destroy even the slightest possibility of rebellious thoughts. By 2050, it will be the ONLY language in Oceania. Newspeak is Big Brother’s language and a primary means of control. While introducing new words, they are also destroying the old. Newspeak is forced into their daily routines. It holds 3 sets of vocabulary, which cover all needs to communicate. Day to day communications, governments and political communications, and all things related to science communications.
