What is the best thing that has ever happened personally? Meeting a spouse? Becoming a parent? Some breakthrough moment of career success? Positivity and success are both aspirations we all strive for throughout life, but quickly realize that we cannot have those without trauma or suffering in some form. Trauma is often associated with death, accidents, and negativity; but, it does not have to be. In the article “Do You Really Have to Fail to Succeed?” Dan McGinn states that “We, as a society, should recognize that trauma can offer an opportunity to test our resilience and then celebrate our mettle” (McGinn, Dan). While some people bounce back from adversity easily than others, every person gains something in the process. With that being said, …show more content…
Suffering, like success, can be interpreted differently depending on the individual; people deal with suffering in different ways therefore, suffering can also potentially lead to failure. Failure shouldn’t always be viewed as a bad thing. Like most people, we may have a bad relationship with failure. We see it as an ending, as proof that our plan didn’t succeed or our ideas weren’t good enough. The truth is, failure happens to everyone. Donald Latumahina states in his article, “3 Reasons Why Failure is the Key to Success,” that
“The only thing that separates people who succeed from those who don’t is a proper understanding of the power of failure. Success requires that you learn from mistakes and missteps along the way rather than falling into despair and giving up” (Latumahina, Donald).
As Latumahina states, failure often affects people negatively leading to them giving up. All too often, people fail, react negatively, and turn to addiction or other unpleasant things. People do not take into consideration that failure is a function of trying, failure builds character, and success lies in seeing failure as a tool

Whether or not they live in a low socioeconomic area or a wealthy community… the area in which one resides is going to affect them, positively or negatively. Jill Suttie, author of “Can Suffering Lead to Success?” she states: “In some communities, people are routinely exposed to traumatic events—most notably the poor who live in dangerous, violent neighborhoods or in war-torn regions of the world” (Suttie, Jill). When people are exposed to such environments, they are likely to appear more pessimistic and deal with sufferings negatively versus if someone is exposed to communities that are bonded together closely.
Swati Gupta tells of a story of a young, successful man who overcame hardships as early as 1530 AD, in his article “Suffering Leads to Success – A Short Story.” In the short story he tells how Zahir-ud-Din Babar was a conqueror from Central Asia who, following a series of setbacks, finally succeeded in laying the basis for the Mughal dynasty in the Indian subcontinent and became the first Mughal emperor (Gupta, Swati). This just goes to show that hardships, setbacks, and suffering has led to success for many years and will continue to do so. Gupta states

Adversity is a basic part of humanity. Without adversity there would never be progress, however, it can be excruciatingly painful. So how-if it is so painful-could this led to progress and relief? Adversity is conflict, it is struggle, and once struggle occurs, the problem can be noticed. This is shown to be true by Barbara Kingsolver in The Bean Trees, Desiderius Erasmus in In Praise of Folly, and Dave Philipps in “Second Judge Blocks Trump’s Transgender Ban in the Military”.…

Whenever we live as normal human beings, we tend to set goals and accomplishments that we want to accomplish one day. We plan out a perfect and hardship free journey to get us right in front of our goal or accomplishment. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world. In any type of journey, we will encounter a certain type of adversity that will try to get us off track and give up on our goals or dreams. As I think about what Horace stated and refer to my thinking, I come to agree with Horace’s statement: “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.”…

Helen Keller once believed that “The struggle of life is one of our greatest blessings. It makes us patient, sensitive, and Godlike. It teaches us that although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” This is important to know, because the struggle for freedom will lead you to wisdom and progress. Struggle and suffering can lead to wisdom and progress due to learning from your mistakes and realizing that you made a mistake in the first place.…

In “On the benefits of failure,” Nigel Barber is right and wrong about failure. One reason he is right is that people who fail really haven’t failed at all. For example, people who fail repeatedly develop persistence in the face of difficulties. For another example with success, people keep on doing the same thing. When they fail, they are forced to adapt and change.…

Why do people suffer? This question has been pondered by key religious and ideological figures throughout history. One such figure was Siddhartha Gautama, an Indian prince whose teachings make up Buddhism. The Four Noble Truths can summarize Buddhist ideology; doctrines that were delivered during the first sermon Siddhartha gave following his enlightenment. The first truth acknowledges the existence of suffering in the form of such phenomena as death, aging, sickness, and not getting what one desires.…

Bad times are inevitable in everybody’s lives, but some question: what good can come from the bad? First published on April 7, 2014, the article “What Suffering Does,” by New York Times columnist and PBS News Hour commentator, David Brooks, digs into this idea through claims that suffering plays a major role in people’s lives because it helps them grow as people (Behrens). Brooks states that happiness is just one piece of “the human drama” and suffering is the other (Behrens). Brooks’ topic of discussion is relevant in everyone’s lives because it is a topic everyone experiences first-hand, and he logically argues through examples that support his claims throughout the article. Brooks’ biggest points are that suffering provides opportunities to get an outsider’s point of view, better understand what others are experiencing, and help people learn more about themselves (567).…

I have failed countless times in my life, but I learn from my mistakes and get back on track to be successful.…

The reasons why each person or nation may experience growth or prosperity may be different; however, the origin of this success is the same. The people who suffer are able to use that suffering to produce better outcomes and experiences. In the absence of suffering, there are no lessons to be learned and no reason to reflect on alternatives. To suffer does not only mean to experience physical pain, but it can also mean to experience emotional pain or be extremely displeased of a current situation. To suffer is to be discontent, and one must do anything to prevent an enduring unhappiness.…
