Do Writers Make People Terrified, Or Suspenseful?

How do writers surprise and terrify readers? What is your worst fear? Me, I have fears of being kidnapped, Snakes, people breaking into my home, the list could go on and on. Prisoners is a film that was released in 2013, It’s about a 6 year old girl being kidnapped and the only lead is a motorhome parked on their street. However after releasing the driver because lack of evidence, the parents take matters into their own hands. I watched this movie and it kept me on my on the edge of my seat until the very end, and played on all of my fears, and made me so terrified i didn’t sleep alone, or unarmed for a week. How do writers make people terrified, or suspenseful?
