Do We Learn To Read Or Write?

How do we learn to read or write? Most people will say it is simply taught to us in our early childhood years of life. And although that is true I believe the real question should be what or who has influenced us to read and write. It could be anything from a teacher or family member to an intriguing book you checked out from the library. Anyone or anything can persuade you to take an interest or disinterest in literacy; It's all about trial and error. Through various experiences we evolve as a learner and use that knowledge to express ourselves. I myself don’t necessarily have an influential character that inspired me to pick up a book. I do however remember the first collection of books I enjoyed reading. In elementary school our teachers would take us to the library after lunch and pick out a book or two to read for the next few weeks. Choosing a book …show more content…
And what makes me up in arms about it is that I don’t have the proper practice or experience to at least feel comfortable writing. The only paper I've ever written before I got to college was my senior project research paper. I needed that paper to graduate so I was very distressed about doing it. It's intimidating to write a 6-7 page paper, especially when it's your 1st one and your High School diploma depends on it. My 11th grade teacher Ms. Marlowe wasn't the best at explaining or really teaching for that matter so I think it's safe to say I was on my own with this one. Luckily I had a few weeks to accumulate my information and type up a rough draft; Boy was it rough. Out of all my grade school years this was by far the most challenging and difficult year to get through. All in all having to write an independent paper so abruptly without the common knowledge really made me despise my first real writing experience. Thankfully yet also regretfully I never had to write another

In the essay, “The Lonely Good Company of Books” by Richard Rodriquez, he explains how he did not know why reading was so meaningful, but as he grew older he understood the values. On the other hand, in the essay, “One Writers Beginning” by Eudora Welty, she addresses how she fell in love with books. Like Rodriquez didn’t understand the value of reading, but loved to read books that he connected with. As my reading levels start to progress over the years I can relate to Rodriquez and Welty experiences because being in reading class was like I was forced to read and I have learned to love books and understand the concepts. Growing up in my household we didn’t have many books to read.…

Beginning from grade school through middle and high school, we learn how to read and write as we grow. It all started back when I finally put down my first copy of Gatsby in the 10th grade. It was that last line that really assured me just how crazy about literature I really was: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past.” I let the novel resonate in my mind and it was from that moment on that I felt a sense of hope and security in my passion. It shifted my perspective on overcoming the currents of life, and personally, the obstacles in my own life. Literature and my culture would be the origin of what has sculpted me into the person I am today.…

My writing experience in and out of school has almost always been seen exactly the same. It’s work, you do it for the grade and for some you suffer the entire time. On the occasional paper, usually one with no restrictions and you choose your subject, I find myself in a love and hate relationship with it. The fact being that writing papers has almost always been seen as homework for me. Have your paper done by this day, it needs to be this many words, and no grammatical errors just isn’t something I’d find myself getting hyped for every saturday night.…
