A Taste of Domesticity in Stokes State Forest Throughout my four years of high school, I had never had a friend come back from a post-prom weekend in Wildwood and describe to me what sounded like a “good time.” The stories they told always had the same synopsis that centered around drunken fun and even drunker stupidity. Hordes of juniors and seniors slept in small dirty motel rooms. They spent way too much money on alcohol, and they often got swindled into paying hundreds of dollars to stay in an otherwise dirt cheap motel because no decent place would allow teenagers to party like they did. They sat in their hotel rooms and drank the beautiful New Jersey beach days away, waiting for the sun to set so they could continue their drunken…

Homelessness Experiment I am not a good car-sleeper, so I knew this experiment was going to end bad from the beginning. Knowing how rough this night could be, Sydney and I did it together.…

I slouched at the table in the boring, gray counselor's room, headphones squeezing my ears, as I did my first hearing and vision screening. The counselor played a series of beeps, and I gave a thumbs up for every time I heard something. Before I knew it, the test was over, and I walked out without giving any further thought to the screening. I had no reason to, as my mom had explained to me earlier that this was simply a mandatory, routine check-up, nothing to worry about. Soon, I was back in my beloved kindergarten class, learning how to spell, read, and write.…

“Get out of the car. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can be used against you in a court of law...” Completely frozen on the floor of my parent’s old navy blue van, all I could think of was the sirens wailing in the background and the familiar lavender aroma that consumed the entire car. My mother always insisted that lavender was the smell of happiness but in that moment, it was the complete opposite. “Por favor señor tengo mis hijos en el caro,” my mom's voice shook with worry as she tried to explain that we were in the car, but unable to understand, the officer continued to grab my mom’s wrists and handcuff her as my siblings and I were watching.…
