Do We Care?

A big question right now is are we respectful to each other? We may be more respectful in person, but on social media people can be very disrespectful. Our peers often post hurtful pictures or comments about individuals, when quite often it is just their opinion. In addition to that it's just them trying to impress their friends or to just be mean. What they don’t know is that the person may take it personal and self harm or hurt themselves because of that. We all know each other, we just don’t choose to care or acknowledge the people and their feelings. Without even noticing or thinking, we comment hateful words or throw trash on the ground which hurts the environment as well. Notably it seems as if people think we just don’t care what people say and if we don’t take it personal. Maybe some people don’t care, but they will have to learn the hard way, sooner or later.

It's is easier to be kind to people when you are kind and optimistic in your manner of ways. Even if it's just putting on a smile it can make someone's day! The worst enemy you will ever have is yourself. You should never be too hard on yourself. You will always need yourself and it is very important to be true to you. But even if you are nice to yourself still try to give a smile to someone you normally wouldn't. Give that last extra ounce to give love to somebody who could use

After reading Brandon Jones’, “Rhetorical Criticism of a Online Discourse,” I came to the realization that online discourse communities are very similar to real life discourse communities. With this in mind, I would argue that when using the internet, people should be treated with the same respect that they are receive in real life. Often times this is not the, as evidenced by Jon Ronson’s article, “How One Stupid Tweet Blew Up Justine Sacco’s Life,” which tells the story of how even a senior director of corporate communications at IAC may not always treat people with the respect that they deserve. In an era where such an emphasis is placed on the prevention of cyber bullying, inclusion, and equality, one would think that mutual respect would…

Technology is ruining the ability to communicate with each other face to face. Without this ability, people are beginning to hide behind their social media platforms and this causes people to say things that are hurtful and damaging. The problem then is dangerous because we lose the chance to understand what is really happening and this causes us to do many things without the thought of consequences or repercussions. The society in Fahrenheit 451 is only focused on what effects them because of this they have centered their self around stuff to take their minds away from truly interacting with others. For example, the society in this book has parties just to sit around a television screen and watch the same thing together.…

A couple weeks ago the world was struck with a great tragedy. To most people, this was new; they had never experienced such violence. To others, it hit where it hurts. I once asked a close friend of mine, “How can a middle school student make a difference?” He simply answered, “ At our age, to make a difference we have to have a drive to make a change. You can’t just blindly run into world wanting to do something; you need a plan, determination, and confidence to know that you can make a difference.” I thought about what he said and realized he had a point. Kids my age are so concerned about the little things we never actually see the bigger picture; that there's something bigger than just dating, clothes and social media.…

The America I believe In The America I believe in includes individual freedom, self-reliance, equality of opportunity, the American dream, and hard work. America is the country people go to, that allow them to gain the life they are wanting. They go for the chance to succeed in life, to give their family a better way of living. Today’s president candidate, Donald Trump, is wanting to take that right away from the individuals and families that are wanting to come to America.…

With the current political climate in the United States, I definitely feel as though we need to reevaluate the way in which crucial issues are discussed and what kinds of solutions are proposed. I think with the advancement of technology and social media platforms, such as twitter, promoting a civil discourse of important issues has become even more difficult. After reading the article entitled “The Meaning of Civility” by Guy Burgess and Heidi Burgess, I agree with many of their assessments and suggestions on how to improve this situation. First of all, especially in the US, it seems to me that the moment someone mentions they are a Republican or a Democrat, the other party is immediately hostile and skeptical. I think the tension-filled…

In medieval times, when knights fought for honor and maidens were simple spectators of matters that were deemed too demanding for them, there existed an extolled code of chivalry that men were expected to live by. Knights were supposed to be brave, loyal, honest, generous, and kind. They were expected to defend the weak, be fair to their opponents, and respect women. However, it has been a long time since the 1100s and society has changed a lot since then. And while chivalry has clung to life for a long time, it is slowly losing it’s grip.…

The 4 ideals set forth in the utopian 10th stage of the human mind as described by Antoine Nicolas de Condorcet are guaranteed the livelihood for the aged, a universal system of education, fewer work hours, and the refinement of a technology for the accumulation of knowledge. (Pg. 305) The first ideal of the 10th stage of the human mind is guaranteed the livelihood for the aged. In other words, the elderly would be warranted means of support, and have nothing to be worried about.…

"Be Kind; Everyone You Meet is Fighting a Hard Battle." It’s a saying we all have known and heard and as cliché as it may be, it’s something I think we all should be doing. Something that has seemingly become less of a thing now a day. Being kind, loving your fellow man, with so much death and murder in the world, it’s easy to look at the world we live in now as hopeless. We always have a tendency of letting the bad outweigh the good.…

The “American Jerk” written by Todd Schwartz is considered in my opinion a plausible essay. Schwartz shows us ways how society has minimized its civility simply by the everyday actions and activities we participate in. This essay gives examples of how politics, social media, economics, and home life struggles affect how we behave. Schwartz mentions the use of off-colored racial jokes being on the same level of disrespect as someone talking loudly on a cell phone. Schwartz gave reasons for our rudeness.…
