Do Tv Shows Affect Society

Decent Essays
This show focused on sexual references and jokes, more than it did friendly humor to make the audience laugh. Even when the jokes were shameful, they were kind of humorous and made the show enjoyable to watch. This shows that today this behavior is found funny and is practiced by teens, too. This is shown by noticing that most of the jokes were sexual, even though there were some that were indeed not sexual. This poses the question: does what actions on TV shows affect the way the society acts today? I believe that this is true. To some people, the actors are their role models, so they will copy what their lifestyle is because they want to be just like them. In February 15th, 2003, the episode of a long-running ABC TV show “NYPD Blue,” “Nude Awakening” has premiered, and became controversial, due to a scene involving nudity. Over the last few years, the terms “indecency” and “obscenity” has been defined and redefined, in order to create proper regulations on programs’ usage of mature content on television. This rule has become more prominent in primetime programs, but not in cable programs since they depend on subscriptions. Ever since cable was introduced, primetime had to frequently compete with cable because the primetime shows had shown decline in ratings as a result of cable’s success. This is partially due to cable’s incorporation of adult content that can’t be often presented on network programming, primarily during daytime and evening.…

Jack R. Poppele once said,“Television’s future is as expansive as the human mind can comprehend.” This is true considering the enormous advances that have been made in the television industry, since Philo Farnsworth first demonstrated it to the public in 1927. In 1945 it was estimated that there were less than 10,000 television sets in American households, which later rose to 52 million sets in 1960. Nowadays 96.7 percent of Americans have a television in their household, and the average American watches 5 hours of TV a day. Television has swiftly changed American culture in extreme ways, along with impacting the views of politics, education, and entertainment.…

When one thinks of television, the image that comes to mind is a stationary piece of furniture, usually containing a cable box attached to a monitor/screen. However, in Jason Mittell’s book, Television and American Culture, Mittell offers a more fluid definition of the concept of television. In the introduction and chapter 1 of Jason Mittell’s book, Television and American Culture, Mittell begins to break down what exactly constitutes the idea of television and goes into detail about the television industry and the roles the television industry plays in the creation, distribution, and transmission of television programs into viewers’ homes. The Derogatory Portrayal and its Effects of Women on Reality Television Many individuals are starting to suggest that the massive production of reality shows emanating negative connotations that reflect overly exaggerated images of womanhood could possibly be responsible for significantly contributing to the influx of emotional disturbances and/or behavior disorders. What society has openly embraced as friendly entertainment, has grossly underestimated and/or has a lack of knowledge in understanding the power of subliminal messages that are transmitted to the subconscious mind and as individuals mindlessly engage the viewings of destructive behaviors portrayed by woman; in addition, to the consequences of the psychological effects a large or consistent consumption of such negative influences can have on the mind; thereby, unknowingly establishing destructive patterns of…

Throughout his article “How a TV Sitcom Triggered the Downfall of Western Civilization”, David Hopkins describes the nature of the Millennial generation by pointing out the obvious flaws of the age group that has altered the course of society. He explains that the attitudes and lifestyles of U.S. citizens were modified because of the contents of the very popular TV Sitcom, Friends. My thoughts, however, differ from Hopkins; I believe that it is an extreme exaggeration to blame the downfall of Western Civilization on a Television show. Hopkins displays a lot evidence to back up his point by discussing some of the events that followed the airing of the beloved sitcom such as “Paris Hilton [starting] her own lifestyle brand” or “Joey Tribbiani…

Video Games Video games have two sides that can have a large effect on society. My 10 year old step brother plays video games, the choices of video games are both positive and negative. He can be okay while playing Football, Minecraft, and Animal Jam, but when he chooses to play killing games he tends to become disrespectful to everyone in the household. Although the media often associates video games with violence, this common stereotype is often defunct by the countless amount of educational games provided to children. The film does more than raise questions about the police censorship and attack on the freedom of choice of young individuals in love, whose actions do not breach public decency in any way. Morality TV is also a powerful indictment on the media’s approach to news bytes that are more titillating and sensational than the factual and objective, with one eye on their Television Rating Points and advertising revenues.
