Himes introduces the chapter with St.Augustine’s discovery that “humans are fundamentally restless” (Himes 39). In my life, I have never really noticed it, but I am constantly restless. In What’s Love Got to Do with It? by Donna L. Franklin, the question of how gender is constructed and ascribed to define humanity resonated with me throughout the text. Through seven chapters from “Breaking the Silence” to “The Path to Healing”, Franklin delves into the dynamics of Black men and women relationships within the United States. Franklin presented a common theme of acknowledging and rebuilding the schism of Black men and women. She traces gender relations from the Middle Passage to the fight of social equality in the Civil Rights Movement to the depiction of the Black family in the twenty-first century in media and popular culture.…

Love, according to Webster, is “a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties.”. For some, this definition of love expresses the way people develop a mutual understanding of one another to attain a level many are unable to reach. Others may believe love can happen by the chance of a glimpse and bind them together by that unknown force without any preceding knowledge of the person. In The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, the “Knight's Tale” shows that love is greater than any other power. Chaucer composed the tale to convey the idea that love brings about unforeseen outcomes.…
