In George Frederickson’s “Models for American Ethnic Relations: A Historical Approach”, four basic concepts are outlined and described: ethnic hierarchy, one-way assimilation, cultural pluralism, and group separatism. While reading “From Rez Life” and watching the film Crash, I found that there are similarities in ethnic relations styles. Many topics can be observed within this movie, but two of the most prominent topics that we covered this semester are social structure, more specifically race and prejudices, and group processes, focusing on status construction. This movie takes place in a small town in North Carolina that has to deal with the shifting racial makeup of their football team, therefore high school, and therefore community. There is a lot of conflict not only between the different racial groups, but also within racial groups when people have different opinions of what is acceptable. The combination of the two racial groups leads to interesting observations of racial opinions and group…
A powerful motive for pursuing social or human services work are personal experiences. I chose to study and work in substance abuse counseling because I wanted the opportunity to do for others what my counselors did for me and my family. During and after my road to recovery I had continued experiences with family and friends who have or still are struggling with sobriety. After attending different types of counseling in different settings for myself and family members it became clear to me that addiction doesn’t discriminate. Addiction doesn’t care where you came from, who you came to be, or what your dreams are.…

Many films throughout history, have not only illuminated some culture’s shortcomings but the strength and ability to deviance in hopes of attaining meritocracy. It is within the arts, films, music and literature that are produced by a culture that researchers can identify the evolution of change from analyzing the micro symbolic interactionism between individuals to the social consensus in the functionalist theory that produces an organic solidarity. Each of these theoretical paradigms allow one the ability to change perspectives in order to deduce how values and norms are modified. Although each theoretical theory can be applied to the film, “The Blind Side” it is while utilizing the macro conflict theory, that social inequality is seen to…
Once the positivist position was staked out in criminology, the whole field was opened up for researchers and criminologists to branch out in many different directions. In the last chapter, Chapter Seven, we explored one particular direction, the theories that looked at the structure of American society and noted that a capitalist society caused strain for many individuals. In addition, cultural/subcultural theories were examined. In this chapter, while continuing to focus, at least for the most part, on theories that have received considerable attention and empirical support, we take a look at social learning theories and social control theories.…
In class, Professor Gerschick explained that theories are systematic attempts to make sense of a particular event or social phenomena that occurs in a given social setting. Depending on the given theorist, each had an individualistic approach to a particular phenomenon and their purpose was to lay out a way to interpret the facet of that social life (Kivisto). Each theory has a goal and that is to explain, predict and/or to understand the phenomena being explained (Gershcick). In order for a theory to be considered one, it must be capable of being applied on both macro and micro levels. Different levels of analysis must be present, as well as different units.…

Section 1: The identity of a social world is a social group and view of the subject matter. The importance of violence in a society is to identify problems in where this problem comes from. Specifically, looking at a group of children where their habits involve a long amount of time on the television where they are influenced by violence. I think that views on violence in this kind of society are almost ignored. Violent behavior can influence and even corrupt those in society.…
