According to the book “Academic performance” the author C.W Reeder indicated that a large number of universities asked their athletic have been resident there in one academic year. All these universities include university of Michigan, Ohio university, university of michigan state which are all good at sports. This may lead people to ask why these universities are concentrating on students’ academics and does sports ability among students have an influence on their academic performance. The first intercollegiate football association (Harvard-Yale-Princeton) was played in 1872. The first intercollegiate track and field association (Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletics of America) was played in 1875. The first intercollegiate tennis match was played 1883. The first intercollegiate ice hockey game (Harvard vs. Brown) was played in 1895. The first intercollegiate gymnastics competition was played in 1899. While the emergence of university sports, researchers started to study the influence of sports ability on the academic performance. According to the experiment THE IMPACT OF SPORT AND NONSPORT ACTIVITIES ON COLLEGE PERSISTENCE OF FRESHMEN(2006), the researcher Leppel, Karen indicated that the students who more likely to do nonsport in the school will more likely to drop the university courses. On the opposite way, students who more likely to take part in competitive sports like football, soccer, and basketball are more likely to have a better grade in the class, because they have a habit of comparing to others.
