Do Something By Sidewalk Prophets: Poem Analysis

Junior year theology focuses on serving people in our community, and I got to do just that at Baptist Hospital and Fair Park Early Childhood Center. From doing odd jobs for nurses and teachers to playing with children I learned a little of what it means to serve. The song “Do Something” reminds us that we are the Hands and Feet of God which means we are expected to comfort and care for the sick. One of my favorite memories working at the nurses’ station happened when I went into to one of the rooms to restock the gloves. There was an older man and his wife getting ready to leave. When I entered the room, I told him who I was, and why I was there. I could see his excitement when he said “Guess what? We get to go home today.” We talked a little more, and even though I did not do much I saw that I brought joy to them. I was able to see the Face of …show more content…
I have had the chance to be in a classroom to play with the children and help the teachers. One time that I really felt like I was helping was when I convinced a little boy to write his name and draw a picture. The teacher was asking him to do what he was supposed to, but he was refusing. So, I sat down and talked him into to doing it for me. After he finished, I could tell that he was proud and that the teacher was relieved. This was a time where I hope that those I served could see the Face of Christ in me. Other tasks I did for the teachers included cutting, gluing, and organizing. Even though they seem like small jobs, it made the day easier for the teachers and allowed them to focus on the

During my high school years, I have primarily provided service through my participation in the Christiana Care VolunTeen program and through the various clubs that I lead. I am helping out at the Jacob Hiatt Magnet School in a 4th grade class. Every week for 2 hours I am able to help students with their classroom activities. At the beginning, I use to just go around in class and help the students when they need help. Now, the teacher has me take the one or two students who are struggling and sit outside with them to help them catch up. This helps them to be able to be on the same page as everyone else and it makes it easier for the teacher as well because it gets really hard for one teacher to be able to keep everyone at the same page and finish the course material on time.…

The ICU ward was filled with a sense of isolation and coldness. On my first day there, I met Manny, a 7-year old Hmong immigrant who was recovering from brain surgery. His mother sat beside him in tears at the sight of her son’s head wrapped in medical dressing and his mouth intubated. I stood quietly in the corner observing the physician on call, Dr. Gajula, attempting to explain post-operation difficulties the patient would endure. Medical jargon poured out of Dr. Gajula’s mouth only to be received by a confused and apprehensive mother.…

As a Person of God and a member of the Body of Christ through baptism, God calls me to serve others as He served during the incarnation. God calls us to take part in Jesus ' life, death, and resurrection, or the Paschal Mystery, so we can share in Him and experience His life on earth. In addition, as a member of the Church, I am called to demonstrate in all that I do the Marks of the Church: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Through my service at Field Elementary, I was not only able to reflect Jesus ' life, death, and resurrection in the Kingdom that is "now," display the Mark "one" of the Church, and make a significant positive difference for the children that I served, but also gain a deeper understanding of my desire to serve others.…
