The one talk that interest me was orientated by Ken Robinson. The topic of the speech was “Do schools kill Creativity, which was filmed Feb 2006. To date there has been reports of 42 million plus views of this controversial topic. As a former educator of the Boys and Girls club after-school programs I often participated and facilitated co-education groups that focused around the creative education activities that sparked an interest in club members to better engaged them in their academics and after-school programming. I discovered just as Ken spoke of that students enjoy learning when its interactive and they can be expressive through their gifted talents and interest. While the American education system clearly drives the traditional learning methods in the minds of elementary, youth and teens, like Ken I believe we often lose focus of what uniqueness is and what makes a …show more content…
I would do anything in my power to participate in musical and sports related programs. My parents were strict with my studies and only allowed for extracurricular activities only if I was doing well academically. I recall being in the 5th grade and not meeting the expectations of the school’s standards academically. If I recall correctly I was struggling with science and mathematics. The travel team basketball season was starting and their was tryout session to determine if you were talented enough to make the travel team. I remember making the team with flying colors and hurrying up home to break the news to my parents that I had made the team. After a late school bus ride home, I arrived in the kitchen to only tell my parents that I had made the team and they stopped in the middle of my announcement to discuss the progress report mailed to my home that evening. I wasn’t allowed to play basketball that season and I failed epically because of my new profound attitude of not

Nowadays, it is hard for students to express their creativity in school when the schools face budget cuts, and essentially eliminates all “unnecessary” programs. In an essay titled “The Sanctuary of School” written by Lynda Barry, she talks about how school for her was a sanctuary, and was a place for her to express her creative mind. She writes, “We all know that a good education system saves lives, but the people of this country are still told that cutting the budget for public schools is necessary, that poor salaries for teachers are all we can manage and that art, music, and all creative activities must be the first to go when times are lean”(650). Without these extra education programs, students are going to grow up in an environment with no creative drive, and it will be strictly educational. With these creative activities, Students are able to break the pressure of fitting in by accepting who they are as a person, and finding people who will accept them for who…

One morning I was sitting in my English class when my teacher handed us a piece by Jerome Stern called “What They Learn in School”. I’m not a big reader so I wasn’t too thrilled about reading Stern’s poem. However, I did become curious once I read the first line. Stern began his poem by stating how “In the schools now, they want them to know all about marijuana, crack, heroin, and amphetamines, because then they won 't be interested in marijuana, crack, heroin, and amphetamines.”…

In James Loewen’s excerpt “The Land of Opportunity “the author discusses middle-class students not knowing anything about how class structure works or how it is changed over time (Loewen 201). In “Do Schools Kill Creativity,” Sir Kenneth Robinson discusses how we are all born with natural capacities for creativity and the systems of mass education tend to suppress them (). That the present education system we now implement is not the failsafe system we think it is. Both narratives tried to explain the failings of the education system, by not going in depth on any given subject, and showing America in the best light. Both Loewen and Robinson decry the broad view of American’s education system failing students that are being taught today.…

I always wanted to be the best, it killed me to see someone else in the game, running the play, scoring baskets, and having it not be me. After the game we all headed into the locker room. While everyone walked ahead in front of me I felt useless. Then Mae the only girl who actually tried to help me walked back with me and put my arm over her shoulder and helped me walk into the locker room.…

I walked into Neil Armstrong Middle School's gym, nervous as can be, not ready for basketball tryouts. The only reason I was there was because my dad and sister wanted me to play. I also wanted to play a sport this year, but I didn't think it would be basketball. It was so loud it sounded like someone was yelling in my ear and playing music at the same time. We started doing lay-up drills, I missed so many compared to the other girls.…

I didn't show up to try outs. I wasn't part of the basketball team any more. That jersey number that was attached to me was stripped from my back. I felt like I had a void in my life, no such thing as practice, leaving school early to go games, and the saddest of all was not doing what I loved. In retrospect, I feel like I should have played the…

Our basketball team hadn’t won a championship game since 1992. It was my senior year and my last shot at redemption against the defending champs. The whole season we only lost one game, we were projected to lose, and we were the underdogs. We had one week left to prepare for what was the largest game of my high school career. Monday’s practice was the worst of the week, we only ran and shot free throws.…
