Do Professional Athletes Make A Difference?

Improved Essays
One person can do something so small for someone and make their whole life change. No one realizes how much one little thing can do to change someone’s mood. You don’t have to have a lot of influence. You really just need to have faith in your power to change things. Always be kind, because you never know what some people are going through or what they have been through in the past. Making one single person smile can change their world. One person can truly make a difference. There are a lot of times you see stuff about professional athletes going around to hospitals and visiting the kids who are sick. They visit kids who really can’t leave the hospital. “When they’re not laying it all out on the field, these professional athletes take time …show more content…
All while waiting for a liver transplant. Kendrick Perkins makes conversation with the little boy who is lying in the bed. His name is Roger. Perkins found out that Roger likes Batman and Harry Potter. Dr Vincent Chiang, the chief of Children’s Inpatient Services comments, “This is about the parents and the children. There’s a feeling of helplessness and vulnerability for our parents here. When people like Kendrick come to visit, just for that moment, the parent gets to be a fan. Sometimes it’s for the parents as much as the patients. A visit like this gives their lives normalcy again. It’s a way to make the helpless, vulnerable feeling go away for a little bit of time. Even for five minutes. It’s something we as physicians can never give them — that moment of being normal again” (Dan Shaughnessy). Just thinking about what the parents go through too is sad. Yes, the kids are the ones that are sick and maybe dying, but they are everything to the parents. I couldn’t imagine being in the situation that they are in. When they say sometimes it’s for the parents just as much as the patients, I can imagine why. The last quote I am going to share is one by Perkins. “It’s emotional. Every child is different. Once you go into a room, you adapt. I stay away from asking how they are doing because they might not be doing that good. I just try to brighten their day, make it a good day to remember” (Dan …show more content…
No matter how bad things got, you’ve always had that one person there for you. They helped you out throughout the tough times, no matter how hard it was to try to get through to you that things would be okay. Someone that sticks with you even though you are super difficult. I am this person for someone that is really close to me. I try everything to get through to her that it is just a bad day, not a bad life. There was a point in her life where she was in a super bad spot. I talked to her. I did everything that I could to get her to realize that she is an important person that people love. She was just at a low point in her life. I’m pretty sure she eventually found out that people care. People want to help. She needs to go to bed each night and think about how much worse her life could be. She has family that loves her and wants the very best for her. She has me, who wants her to be herself and take every opportunity that she has to achieve her dreams. Tomorrow is a new day. Move on and good things are bound to happen. Being so close to her, it was easier for me to talk to her and for her to listen than it was for any of her others friends. I’ll admit, it gets hard. But you’ll never regret sticking with it and helping someone out that you love dearly. Do you think that one person can make a difference? I don’t understand why you wouldn’t, especially

    1. If all athletes do it wouldn’t that make it fair? It is assumed that many athletes already take/ use performance enhancing drugs regardless of their illegal status therefore if we make it legal I would assume that majority of athletes would take advantage of the situation and participate in legal doping, then it would make the competition fair because all performance enhancing drugs are available to the athletes as well as the most elite equipment and sporting gear too. 2. Athletes would be able to compete in mixed gender races.…

Many people have an athlete that they look up to and that is their role model. Many of these people are children and teens so because of this people think that it is the sports teams responsibility to hold players to a higher standard for their personal conduct. It is the sports teams responsibility because of the power athletes can have in a society and the image of the team and the game they can create. Players should be held to a higher standard because since they are celebrities they have the power to spread messages to their fans and society. In a website article called, “Are Athletes Good Role Models?” from Psychology Today by Frank L Smoll Ph.D, it says that “Athletes have an incredible opportunity to use their celebrity power to…
