Do Police Get Paid Too Much

Improved Essays
Do police get paid enough? Does the military get enough recognition? Actors and/or athletes are paid too much, especially when they are compared to more dangerous, important jobs. They don’t provide protection to citizens, give back to the economy, and they are just entertainment. First of all, they don’t provide any protection at all. Police for example, provide us so much security, that if someone breaks into your house you can call them and they will come as fast as possible. If anything, actors and athletes need more safekeeping that people who are not as widely known as they are. Because some people threaten their lives who are not happy with their work, a crazy fan for example.
Secondly, actors and athletes are just for entertainment

Imagine you are a hardworking doctor or lawyer, and you aren't getting paid the amount you should be. Other people like you who are bettering our community aren't getting paid the amount they should be, and all of your tax money is going towards paying for athletic stadiums. Doctors, teachers, government employees, police officers, firefighters, and lawyers should be receiving the money that athletes receive. Professional athletes provide entertainment for society, but I believe they receive an unreasonable salary. Overall, athletes are overpaid because all they are doing is playing a game to entertain while other more important professions are making much less, they don't contribute to society, there are better places to use the money, and the money received could be used to pay for more useful causes that would benefit our society.…

When asked in a debate if they are overpaid or not there were advocates for both sides and a lot of the people who thought they weren’t overpaid had reasons a lot like “They are being rewarded for their hard work and dedication” (“Are Football Players Overpaid”). This is true, they did work for this their whole lives and it was not easy by any means; however, the same could be said for everyone who takes hard classes in high school and college in order to pursue a job that requires a high gpa. That is also very hard work, it may not be physically hard but it is mentally difficult and they need to dedicate just as much time to their studies as football players need to dedicate to their practices. Despite this, they are not making $2,100,000 every year. They worked hard, they dedicated their whole lives to getting to this job.…

Some people may argue that the reason sports stars get paid so much is because they run a risk of getting injured. John Ciaran, the author of “Salary for a Rookie Cop in NYPD”, says that New York City police only average a salary of $50,000 per year (Ciaran). Police officers run a major risk of getting injured, or even killed. Why would we pay someone more for less of a…

“People complain that professional athletes get paid too much, but what they don’t understand is that we need a lot of money because we spend a lot of money,” is a quote from Patrick Ewing, a famous NBA star. His quote directly shows that athletes are being paid too much. For example athletes get paid a great deal more than the working class. They also get paid way more than surgeons, who save lives. There are also orphanages who barely make enough money to keep the kids safe.…

For the example of a firefighter and a police officer, they should be paid as much as footballers should be, because they are true honorary heros. Police officers are paid to protect and serve, and firefighters are paid to put out fires. Both of those things are very extraordinary to do. For footballers, they are just paid to kick a soccer ball into a goal which is way too much money as a fact. People that have jobs that save many lives almost to risk their own lives should be paid as much as footballers, but not overpaid.…
