Do Pit Bulls deserve the poor stereotyping they receive? Every year over one point two million dogs are euthanized in America alone. A startling forty percent of those dogs are pit bulls. That means that every year over half a million pit bulls are euthanized in America. This number has risen so high over the years because of the poor name and stereotypes that have been placed on pit bulls. Pit bulls have been labeled as mean and aggressive dogs for many reasons. One is due to their history of being in dog fights. This became very well known due to the NFL superstar Michael Vick, he bought and fought many different breeds of dogs. People have brought on such a poor reputation for pit bulls. Pit bulls are given a bad rap because of their involvement in dog attacks, but one thing needs to be set straight. According to “Pit Bulls Info” pit bulls actually consist of three different types of dogs, the American pit bull Terrier, the American staffordshire terrier, and the staffordshire bull terrier. When you look at dog attack statistics and see pit bull at the top it is easier to understand why they are there. It is because a dog attack by any three of the previously stated dogs all qualify as pit bull attacks, they are not separate categories because they all technically qualify as pit bulls. Sometimes even more than these three breeds are lumped together into the “Pit Bull” statistics. “Many dogs that are not even truly pit bulls are lumped into this category as well. Any dog bearing even one or two of the physical characteristics of a pit are often called “pit bull type” dogs”(Types 1). It is not only the inconsistent types of dogs that are labeled as pit bulls in statics that is unfair, but the restrictions that may keep people from adopting pit bulls as
