People were relaxing at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. All of a sudden they were interrupted by the sound of fists beating on the door. It was the NYPD coming to raid the place. At the time homosexual acts were illegal, therefore usually when police raided gay bars people didn 't fight back. This time was different, they were sick of being pushed around. They fought back, throwing stools, bottles, and punches. A special unit had to be called in to break up the riot. From then on nothing was the same. Today people look back and realize what an effect it had for many years to come. "Historians have pointed to this incident, known as the Stonewall Riot, as the genesis of the modern gay rights movement." The United States is such a melting pot and there 's so many different races which means there 's many different religions, and some say that homosexual relationships are a sin, such as Islam, Catholics, and Christians all believe this. Reform Judaism is the only religion that accepts same-sex couples. People of these religions also believe that homosexuality is a choice, and that you 're not born gay. "Many opponents of gay marriage argue that homosexuality is a choice which therefore makes the gay rights movement unlike any other civil rights movement." ("Do People Deserve the Same Rights" 10) The most common view on marriage is that it 's between a man and a woman. It 's argued that the reason people marry is to reproduce, and same-sex couples can 't naturally do that so they believe they shouldn 't have the right to marry. "Opponents of same-sex marriage argue that the institution of marriage should apply only to unions between one man and one woman. Allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry, they say, undermines the institution of marriage itself." ("Same-Sex Marriage" 1) Marriage has been the same thing for many years, and now people are trying to change it and opponents of gay marriage don 't like it. Since DOMA isn 't in effect anymore, every state has it 's own rule. Just like every religion has it 's own belief.
