The believers in the church of Ephesus were struggling with lying, anger, stealing, unwholesome speech, hard feelings and bitterness. These are things that all Christians have had to deal with but people today tend to over glamorize the early church. In Jewish tradition they would encourage community members not to let anger continue day after day (Arnold, 306). The city of Ephesus during this time definitely had a disease of sensual unrighteousness and it corrupted the people (Preacher’s Outline, 117).

The word mouth is described as the edge of a sword which in the Greek is pronounced as stoma. Paul wanted to make sure that it was one of the first things he covered when he was addressing the problems in the church of Ephesus during this day. He makes it clear that we only should be letting wholesome speech come out of our mouths. Speech that builds up our brothers and sisters in Christ, and does not tear them down even when they are not around to hear it. The next word to pay attention to is “grieve”. Some synonyms for grieve would be sorrow, distress, and heaviness. Paul is calling us to not grieve the Holy Spirit of God. This simply means that you have gotten so far away from the Lord and the work of the Holy Spirit in your life that it is essentially irrelevant in your life any longer. Paul tells the people in Ephesus to not let this happen but to constantly stay close to God and always be aware of the work of the Holy Spirit in their life.
