Do Curfews Keep Teens Out Of Trouble?

Teens want independence, they want to show a new and different side of them. They show a different identity and want to rebel against what they are told to do by testing the authority and pushing things to the limit. Curfews keep teens safe and out of trouble and help them create structure in their life, but sometimes make teens rebel more. This topic is important because teens are the future of the world and need to be kept healthy and safe. Curfews also keep kids out of trouble and lessen crime rates. The more parents tell their kids to come home a certain time, the more they’re not going to want to. Studies have shown that if curfews are placed in order that they lessen juvenile crime, even though teens want to show independence and rebel against what they are told to do by authority by police and parental guidances. When curfews are not emplaced crime goes up because teens are messing around. “Non-curfew crimes increased by 53% during the school year, but over the summer break crime went down by 12%. If someone really wanted to do something that couldn't do at night they would just do it during the day. Also no one is ever safe and crimes can be committed any time of the day. If a teen is out past a curfew they do not get in trouble they are just told to go home but if they are out later they face a small fine or a couple of hours of community service. “The highest time for teen crime is around 3pm and drops off after 9pm”(Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention).
