How disappointing would it be for individuals to receive similar awards for working extra hard versus normal participation? Trophies should only be given to overachievers or individuals who give extra efforts, not just everyone. One can have the opposite opinion believing that everyone should receive trophies, not just MVP’s. If trophies are given to everyone, it can minimize the achievement and celebration of the individuals who challenge the best. When trophies are given to only leaders, it can also create competition to increase everyone’s skill level and to help gain confidence to improve. When individuals receive trophies for special efforts, they will win a lifetime memory. The trophy will remind them of a special accomplishment, not just a normal effort. The happiness from the special achievement will help them work harder for future trophies. When trophies are distributed to everyone for effort that just states that everyone put in the same amount of effort. Even though, most individuals are at different levels and will push themselves if it’s a competition for an award. If there are less trophies handed out, it will create more competition to win one. In the quote, “when awards are handed out like candy to every child who participates, they’ll diminish in value” (The New York Times 1) it helps support that trophies shouldn’t be given out to everyone. If too many trophies are awarded, the value of the award will go down. If only winners are given trophies it will become a very valuable sign of accomplishment. Less trophies and higher value of each one is good for our society.
