In another survey, taken by 145 students, 128 of the 145 check their phones when they are bored waiting for someone. 115 of 145 check them as soon as they wake up. 107/145 are tempted to use their phones during class, and 88/145 take it everywhere they go; including restrooms.
Cell phones have been the main cause of car accidents recently. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in crashes involving a cell phone. The National Safety Council reports that using cell phones while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. 1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving. Some of the pros of banning cell phones are: They won’t be a potential misuse during academic examinations, they are sometimes perceived as “contraband”, akin to illegal substances or guns, and bans are seen as means of maintaining school safety and security. Some cons of bans are: they are too much work for police device use, and the attitude towards it is “ children are going to bring devices to school anyways, so why fight it”. Also, some teachers say storing students’ confiscated devices is/ can be a hassle, and to keep them, students must learn good online etiquette.
