Do Animals Die Prematurely In Zoos

“The caged eagle became a metaphor for all forms of isolation, the ultimate in imprisonment. A zoo is prison.” An eagle is a symbol of freedom and here we are caging it up and locking it away. Animal captivity should not be allowed because it is cruel and unfair to the animals. Just because people want to see the animal up close there are other ways you can view and learn about animals without keeping them trapped in a cage.
For starters, zoos can not provide enough sufficient space for the animals to live in. Where in the wild they would have the whole jungle or safari to roam they are all cramped into a tiny living space. The one good thing about keeping them in these cages or enclosures is us, the people, can see them and better understand how they react and interact. Though there is a better way to do so, this one is more convenient to us.
Another reason is, animals die prematurely in zoos. Elephants die 3 times faster in the zoo then in the wild. 40% of baby cubs in zoo captivity die within the first month while it's believed that only 30% of baby cubs in the wild die within the first 6 months. At least ⅓ of those deaths are due to things

In the film “blackfish” it talks about how whales and other sea wildlife are kept in cages about the size of the animal making it nearly impossible for them to swim around. Also making them do tricks for food and when failing to do so, starves all of them so the other animals turn and attack the other so it will do the trick right the next time. They also starve the animals before a show so they are hungry and will do the tricks for the food. But when the animals doesn't do the trick or doesn't get food and is hungry and sees a human swimming around it is going to do what most animals would and attack it. But instead of the industry getting in trouble, the animal gets shot for incorrect behavior even those that's what it would have done in the wild.

Animals that are living in cages for most of their lives won’t know how to hunt and find food. Survival would be harder than it already has to be. Animals wouldn’t survive long without their predatory instincts. In zoos, animals don’t need to hunt or survive on their own, and everything they need to survive is already there for them. For animals to survive, they would have to be in captivity their whole life, or in the wild their whole life.…

Taking in an injured animal from the wild and rehabilitating it while studying it is one thing, but purposefully hunting and capturing these animals for them to put on shows is impermissible. Through the extensive interviews with former Seaworld trainers and investigation into the wrongdoing of multiple institutions, the movie Blackfish was able to show the barbaric practices being performed on these innocent animals. Early in the documentary, the process…

I have not been to zoos often, but when I have I have never witnessed animals in cages, particularly not the generic metal bar cages that are often seen in movies. Animals are kept in natural exhibits, with glass or open areas for viewing. Laidlaw eventually concluded that zoos should either improve their bad habits, or face losing their jobs. I am in agreement with this statement, however, I feel that most zoos do not have to face this choice as they are doing fine as it…

At a standard zoo, they are usually placed with two roommates and a couple of acres of space (Horton, Howstuffworks.com). These examples can support the claim that zoos can be more defined as a collection of exotic animals, rather than a save haven and home for endangered species. Not only are living standards low, they can become even fatal when zoos need to cut…

Are zoos really as sufficient as the animal's natural environment? Many people would argue yes, and believe that they are even better. The animals are no longer trapped in small cages for people to ogle and poke at, instead they are kept in large enclosures, and provided with plenty of food and water. Whereas, in their natural environment it may not always be easy to find the proper food and nutrients, and as a result of this many animals have faced extinction.…

Defenders of zoos claim that this is justified though because they are provided with food, shelter, and the safety from predators. She argues by saying, “…animals in nature don’t move around their territories only for food and survival. Their bodies are made for traveling, and preventing them from movement causes sever amounts of distress.” Wickins-Drazilovás questions if the animals have dignity. They are being kept in cages and being stared at.…

Zoos can be good for animal welfare when it is proven that these animals need assistance to survive and cannot make it on their own. Where I disagree with zoos, is when zoos breed animals in captivity and take animals from the wild that are not injured or ill. These animals have a right to life and natural selection just like humans do. Imagine living your life one day and then being snatched and taken somewhere where your natural desires and needs typically are not met. A good example of this would be human trafficking.…

Though, I know the establishment of zoos gave people the opportunity to see and learn about different animals from around the world, they play a role in animal conservation and education. It is a way of preserving species of animals that may become extinct in the future. What we do not realize is by keeping these animals in confinement, it is an act of cruelty and we do not know what takes place behind the scenes of the shows and displays of these animals. Studies have indicated that confined animals living with uncommon social groups, different climates, and unsuitable diets, unlike animals living in the wild, can lead to animals suffering from psychological and physical problems such as zoochosis. Zoochosis is a kind of behavior common in…

In these zoos, animals are treated cruelly and are killed for no reason, animals go through mental/psychological disorders, and lack the nutritious values that are only given to them in the wild. These reasons prove that zoos need to be shut down and these helpless animals deserve to live and thrive in the environment and habitat they come from. It is disturbing to think of how positive zoos are seen and how they are a popular attraction for people of all ages. Next time people go to a zoo, they should look closely at these animals and see the misery and depression in their…
