Geneticists have worked towards sequencing the human genome since developing Sanger sequencing in the 1970s. The Human Genome Projected accomplished this in 2003, but now the public wants their own genome sequenced. Some companies have already started performing sequencing for profit. While clinical studies, perform and disclose results genetic sequencing to participants. However, there are scientific, and ethical issues surrounding personal DNA sequencing. Despite this, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. I would get my gene sequencing because it can illuminate important information. Specifically, I want to know about medically actionable genes, genetic diseases I can develop, early onset brain diseases and if I 'm a carrier of genetic …show more content…
On the one hand, I should have the autonomy to seek personal information, as discussed by Dr. Zlotnik-Shaul. If I feel a genetic report will produce important results, I should be allowed to get one. Especially since gene sequencing is increasing in quality. However, genetic sequencing is more complicated. Experts are still debating how to read and interpret the genome certain sections of the genome. Specifically, the importance of non-coding regions of the DNA, which spans 99% of the genome, is unknown. Also, the protein coding region may have different interpretations due to SNP variations. Thus is it ethical to disseminate genetic reports? Currently, this is the most accurate information with the present knowledge of genetics. In addition, Dr. Szego discussed the repercussion genetic testing may have on family members. Family members have similar genetic sequencing thus performing genome sequencing on one could produce relevant information to all members. So it may be wise to discuss with family members what information they may be interested in knowing. Especially with sensitive topics like early onset brain disease or being a genetic disease
