According to http://www.encyclopedia.com, DNA which stands for deoxyribonucleic acid is used for human genetic makeup. It has different sequences of bases and exist in human body. The sequence of it nucleotides are A, T, G, C; or, adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine, respectively. A DNA fingerprinting, is a DNA pattern that has a unique sequence such that it can be distinguished from the DNA patterns of other individual. The two major uses for the information is for personal identification and for the determination of paternity. DNA can be analyzed from a variety of human samples including blood, semen, saliva, urine, hair, buccal (cheek cells), tissues, or bones. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is used to amplify the genomic DNA from a sample and electrophoresis is used to arrange the segment. …show more content…
Electrophoresis was then used to make analysis. During this lab activity, we were required to do human DNA fingerprinting which is a method used to identify individuals and to prove their relationships. Due to time and the length of this lab activity, the experiment was divided into part one: DNA Purification from Buccal Swabs, part two: PCR (polymerase chain reaction) amplification of the d1s80 VTNR locus from human genomic DNA and Part three: Analysis of PCR products using gel electrophoresis. We had a specific activity to carry out during each lab section.
