During TAL 856, Curriculum Theory, I had to create a Universal Design for Learning Plan, also known as an UDL Plan. As a beginning teacher, I honestly had no idea how to foster quality inclusive planning or differentiate across content. This UDL plan was my first attempt to create a culturally relevant and responsive lesson. In this plan, the unit was an exploration of how factoring expressions can relate to finding commonalities people share in our classroom. Students were able to make connections between finding the greatest common factors of each term in a polynomial, …show more content…
I researched a theoretical framework, culturally responsive pedagogy, which became the foundation of my UDL Plan. I truly believe in diversity and I am happy that my classroom is full of students from different backgrounds. In TAL 856 I developed a broad knowledge base in the field of curriculum studies with an emphasis on curriculum for students with diverse learning needs. I applied knowledge of principles and theories for understanding, implementing and evaluating school curriculum. It makes the class more interesting when pairing students together, watching them learn from each other and work …show more content…
Students were able to break down the common factors of a polynomial along with the commonalities they shared amongst each other. Much of this information was sort out through a series of questions which falls under Enquiry claims 3-5. Overall these claims discuss the ability to create learning context that engage students through inquiry and showing commitment to the on-going improvement of my teaching. As I stated before, I had never created a unit plan, unsure of how successful it was going to be, I created something in my class that I believe showed my students how dedicated I am to making this a subject of more than just

Course Reflection and Professional Application While conducting research in this course, I came across a quote from Cesar Chavez, “We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens the community – and this nation”. Prior to this course, I was knowledgeable about the cultural, linguistic, and learning needs in my classroom. What I have learned is the importance of not only knowing about the diversity but being able to address it professionally and provide the best possible education for every student. I learned the importance of involving and communicating with the families of my diverse learners as well as the community. I will continue to educate myself about best…

I believe by incorporating multicultural education as well as aspects of equity and diversity into the classroom, young students will become more aware of the increasing need of awareness of the cause. For example, students will be able to identify ways that they can interact with other individuals who are ‘different’ from themselves. With proper education, students and educators, will have developed the necessary skills to properly handle these topics when they arise through their personal experiences in education or within society. Additionally, the importance of educators growing awareness of these topics allows them to meet the growing needs of their students, ultimately providing them with a continuing path for an beneficial education experience. Therefore, my plan as a future educator is to engage my students with equity and diversity topics and activities to create an anti bias education.…

As I was reading the final chapter of the 5 Practices book, I was reminded of how important collaboration is – not only for my college studies but more importantly for my future teaching career. Reflecting on the work Sam & I put into our unit plan for this course, it was helpful to talk through ideas with one another and to see the different perspectives we each had. There are many times where I get stuck in my own thinking and it is truly helpful to be able to gain a fresh outlook when working with someone else to help put the pieces together to develop a final product that highlights each of our strengths (for example, Sam offered to make the rubric for the summative assessment whereas I probably wouldn’t have been able to develop one quite as comprehensive as his). Learning from others while integrating your own efforts is an exciting part of the learning process and is a skill I want to continue developing for my own teaching and even promote in my future classroom. To further emphasize the need for teacher collaboration versus having an individualistic mindset as a teacher, I will share a memory of my FEEP experience last semester.…
