Django Unchained And 12 Years A Slave

Improved Essays
Django Unchained and 12 years a Slave are two films that fall under the genre “torture porn”. Brutality torture and violence committed against another person was the main focus in both films. Barone and Schafer shared the same view that 12 years a slave was a horror show, scrutinizing the dark side of humanity, which strayed away from slavery in American history. Schafer pointing out that Solomon the main character was not seen for the person he truly was and instead focusing only on his discrimination and suffering. Brown suggested that slaves could not write or leave behind there personal experiences at that time which I agree with because information could be taken out of context exaggerated or written from a completely dissimilar view.

There is a common accepted historical narrative that portrays the antebellum era as one fraught with prominent, white figures who owned slaves who were subservient and complacent. This commonly accepted notion of what slavery was like depicts slaves as individuals who simply accepted their fate and did not opt to exercise any form of agency. This notion that slaves did not try to actively resist the confines of slavery is untrue and is illustrated by the work Kindred by Octavia Butler, Black Thunder by Arna Bontemps, and Django Unchained directed by Quentin Tarantino. These creative works of historical fiction do accurately represent how slaves were treated but also, perhaps more important how slaves resisted such unjust treatment. The three aforementioned pieces were all created at different period of time.…

The theme of morality was an issue that was ever-present not only in the lives of slaves but also the lives of plantation owners and their less fortunate counterparts, but it can best be analyzed in the more modern context of cognitive dissonance which in short refers to this internal strife where people become complacent with their lifestyle. In the movie we witness quite a few instances of violence, but I want to focus on the sexual violence experienced by the slaves in the film this was encapsulated in the scene in which Kizzy (Kunta Kinte’s daughter) was raped by the slave master. In his journal William Byrd II detailed his everyday actions, but in some of the most notable and appalling he described the acts of sexual violence in which…

Unfavorable conditions, such as starvation and beating, symbolize the idea of romance between slaveholder and slave as the poor treatment portrays the downfall in their relationship. One image Douglass describes in particular is the memory of, “the cruel lashings to which these slaves were subjected” (21). As Douglass encountered many distinct slaveholders throughout his life as a slave, slaveholders would commonly torture their slaves without any provocation. One slaveholder specifically, by the name of Captain Auld, would tie up one of his younger female slaves, and whip her between four to five hours at a time, in Douglass’ memory, for no apparent reason. This tortured slave had no use of her hands, and had also never proven to be problematic.…

Slavery and the reconstruction era were two large portions in American history that contained minimal written records. How can historians learn about these slaves and their account of slavery and emancipation? Slave masters held a tight grip on power over their slaves by kept their slaves illiterate. Originally only whites had letters, diaries, and first hand accounts about this peculiar institution. The rise of oral testimony gave the slaves, who had the courage to speak up, the opportunity to speak out against the horrors of living from the bottom of the rail.…

INTRO STATEMENT. Slave narratives are used to spread the messages of abolitionists but most importantly rebut the arguments of pro-slavery. While reading about the life of a slave, readers get to question whether this institution is truly beneficial or morally wrong. Exposing the horrors of slavery, the narratives elaborate on the stripping away of all human identity. Using the influential and gripping pieces to their advantage, abolitionists exploit the dehumanization, inequality, and discrimination told throughout slave narratives to campaign against slavery.…

Slave Josiah Henson described how the one hundred lashes his father received for defending his wife from being raped by their master triggered his father’s mental deterioration into a detached person. Ultimately, dehumanizing the slaves into submission made it easy for the masters to treat them as property as they were “subject to his will in all things… [and had] no shadow of law to protect [them] from insult, violence, or even from death”…

In today’s society, euphemisms and political correctness often mask the dark and seldom discussed crudeness of slavery to avoid expressing the true damage it inflicts. Toni Morrison lifts this veil as she successfully attempts to inform readers in unrestricted detail of the animalistic treatment endured by the black population in her novel, Beloved. Through explicit scenes of abuse and recollections of memories once locked away, Morrison gives audiences an insight into the torture that convinces black slaves they are nothing more than animals, as well as who is to blame for their pain. First, schoolteacher ensures that future generations continue the white racist agenda of ridding the black population of their human traits. Second, the inhumane…

From its opening account of his birth to its closing pages depicting his new-found freedom, Frederick Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Written by Himself is characterized in part by its strikingly fluid, refined, and effective prose style. Despite his masterful control of language a paradoxical problem seems to subtly haunt Douglass's Narrative: the text's memorable prose is perhaps ironically too good. As an ex-slave autobiographer, Douglass was traveling a road already well-worn by the accepted conventions of his day for both autobiographies and slave narratives.…

Movies have always had a way of bringing to life the written word. When a modern movie tries to portray the thoughts of long age, sometimes the perceptions of the modern world infiltrate the storyline. These perceptions can be seen when analyzing the movie versus the book of Solomon Northup’s 12 Years A Slave. Director Steve McQueen and screenwriter John Ridley were able to infuse the essence of Northup’s book, while also adding the views from now with regard to slavery.…
