In today's world, many couples getting married have parents who are either divorced or who were never married. For some brides and grooms, the fact that their parents are no longer together does not cause a problem. Other couples, though, face an assortment of divorced parents dilemmas throughout the wedding planning process.

Parental Roles Dilemma

The parental roles dilemma is a problem that many couples, particularly the bride, often face when one or more of their parents have remarried. This can especially be a problem if you grew up considering both men your father or both women your mother.

Many fathers have always dreamed of walking their daughter down the aisle. Picking who will walk you down the aisle can be a problem if you are close to both your father and your stepfather. One solution is to have your father walk on one side and your stepfather walk on the other side. You could also have one father walk you partway down the aisle and have the other walk you the rest of the way down the aisle. Some brides who are closer to their stepfathers also choose to have their stepfather rather than their biological father

If you are close to both your mother and your stepmother, you may want to bring both women along as you pick out your wedding dress. This works out great if both women can get along. Unfortunately, it can be a disaster if they end up arguing the whole time.

There are a few ways you can solve the wedding dress shopping dilemma. If you are going to several stores to try on dresses, bring your mother to one store and your stepmother to another store. You could also bring one wedding dress shopping with you and do other wedding shopping with the other one. If you can find an intermediary, such as your sister, you may be able to bring along both women with the understanding that if an argument starts, one or both of them will be asked to leave.

Ahrons (2007) argues that a family systems perspective or life-span approach be adopted since parent-child relationships remain throughout the life cycle. Early interventions with fathers post-divorce increases their involvement with their children (Cookston et al, 2007) and this leads to the likelihood of better relationships with their children twenty years on (Ahrons & Tanner, 2003). Amato and Sobolewski (2001) suggest that interventions that promote positive involvement of both parents and cooperative post-divorce parenting are critical. The availability of parent education classes for divorcing parents and mediation services may help to achieve these goals (Emery, Kitzmann & Waldron, 1999). Amato (2001) recommends the speeding up of the…
