I remember the day all too well. The screaming and shouting. The fighting. The saying that they were through. Hearing my mom say she didn’t want him anymore. The day is here again, I thought to myself. It was the tenth year since my parents’ divorce. Ten years ago, my mom had met a steamboat driver during a sales trip in Memphis. After that, whenever she traveled that way, she met up with Mendax in secret. My dad tried to bring her out of it; but his attempts to make good only drove her away. She filed for divorce and ran back to Missouri with Mendax just as I was packing to leave for college.
I went through college without my parents. I got my Master’s in Physical Therapy and no one from my family was there to see me walk across the stage. I moved as far from my parents’ divorce as I could. I got a ranch in Colorado, and named it sanitatum. The name is Latin, it means “healing”. I was hired as a Physical Therapist at a children’s hospital. I distanced myself from my dad the manager of the Yankees and my mom who was hooking up with Tom Sawyer. I train for America Ninja Warrior in my free time and eat sushi. It was my way of coping.
I celebrate their divorce the Samuel way every year since I got my Master’s. When I arrived at Sanitatum, the first thing I did was mark off a thirty-five-foot square right in the middle of the land.

The show was America Ninja Warrior™ and I was immediately hooked. I didn’t want to just watch the show, I was determined to compete on the show one day. Over the last four years, I have filled Sanitatum with obstacles that I train on. Every year, I send in an application video. I have never been accepted, but this year will be

On an ordinary day, around 4:45 pm, I, Matthew Watson entered society as an innocent and delicate infant destined to inherit this world. Full of life and energy, but, in desperate need of care, I was greeted with unconditional love from two enduring individuals, who had persevered through the trials of life: my parents. I can only imagine what I felt during these times. Being constantly under watchful and careful eyes, having utmost attention, and most importantly living a happy, simple life were all commodities that I enjoyed. In the article “The Battle for Divorce in Italy and Opposition from the Catholic World (1861-1974)”, Daniela Saresella argues that following World War II, the “processes of secularization” (Saresella, 411) that were altering the western world, took hold in Italy and set the stage for the 1974 referendum on divorce. The referendum was an integral moment as it marked the first division of the Catholic world and allowed Catholic citizens the understanding that they were not required to vote in alignment with the Catholic Democracy, the political party in power in Italy at this time. Saresella provides a foundation for this argument by providing one with a historical account of divorce in Italy from its introduction by the French during its occupation…

White, somber, official papers brimmed with adultery and years of regrets---scattered across my parent’s bed and bedroom floor. While my parents rehearsed in their minds the contrived lies they were going to tell me, the fluorescent lights from the fan above the bed they sat in, illuminated their room, and ventured to expose their deceptions. I studied every drop of perspiration on their faces, and wrinkles that danced amongst their troubled eyes, while they struggled for the appropriate words pointed towards the conclusion of our once “happy” family. “Ye---how’d—you---know---uh---that?” my mom said, forcing the words to come out, in an attempt to compose herself.…
