Adrienne Rich wrote this poem to basically show what it means to be a man or woman, how we relate to the past and how it feels to be alone. “Adrienne wants to go back to figure out what happened in her life that left her somewhat damaged in a way but she also wants to find what’s left that is still worthy”. The line "First the air is blue and then it is bluer and then green and then black I am blacking out and yet my mask is powerful". Shows that she's going deeper and deeper in the ocean, which symbolizes her dark journey and how it’s fearful. The line "There is a ladder. The ladder is always they’re hanging innocently" represents that she can always turn and go back out of her journey. The line "And now: it is easy to forget what I came for among so many who have always lived here " explains how easy it is to forget why she's in the U.S where its supposed to be about freedom, rights, and peace when while she wrote this poem the total opposite was going

This week, our class had the chance to read four interesting poems of Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, We Real Cool, Mad Girl’s Love Song, and Hanging Fire. Each of these poems highlight the important role that imagery and other poetic devices play into an interpretation of a poem and how crucial it is to understand the perceptive of a poem’s speaker. The poem I enjoyed the most this week was Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde. On the surface, Hanging Fire is about a 14 year-old who struggles with typical adolescent things such as bad skin, boy problems, school dances, and braces. However, once we re-read the poem and took the time to analysis it, it because quite clear that teenaged problems are not the only things troubling the speaker.…

Many people believe that literature only comes from the thoughts and styles of writers. They also think that words don't mean anything to anyone, and that literature is just words. However it is more than just that, literature is a reflection of events in life and experiences of society. Authors like Harper Lee allow writers to share the good and bad values of human life, and it allows the reader to learn a lesson about life through the experiences of society like the author Sandra Cisneros.…

The poem depicts an explicit view on the purpose of literature today, as we generation Z and future generations are straying away from the meanings of literature to a more scientific understanding. The scientific community and the Language arts community are at a conflict together as one community seeks only the answers while the other takes the individual, and guides them on a journey that will bring them to the depths of critical thinking. This is implied in the poem when the author suggests dropping a mouse into the poem searching and feeling the walls for the light switch. The mouse represents us, a timid creature with tunnel vision, focused exclusively for an escape rather than observe our environment. The searching and feeling…

Because everyone differs from one another, each person’s opinions and interpretations of everyday events will vary based on how the information is perceived. These differences are especially noticed when reading and analyzing works of literature. Poems, for example, often lead to an audience with very different interpretations of the meaning being conveyed. Although Natasha Trethewey’s poem, “Artifact,” is a rather simply structured and straightforward poem, the connotations of the diction can cause a reader’s interpretation to be completely different than the poem’s intended meaning.…

“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…

A world without literature would be one stuck in constant reoccurrence, ignorant to others collective advancement and defeats. Telling a story whether it be a first or second hand account always has an underlying purpose for writing. This elemental component of writing allows authors to reflect and evaluate their personal accounts and decisions, it prevents readers from making the same mistakes as their past ancestors, and educates those in forthcoming centuries what trials and tribulations have led them to their current liveliness. Literature is the integrating mechanism that keeps all educational subjects at a progressive pace. When studying such topics as mathematics, science, health, art and music one must first analyze past literary works…
