Divine Law And State Laws In Sophocles Antigone

The main idea of the Sophocles, Antigone story goes around the idea of divine law and state laws. The story starts with Antigone talking to her sister Ismene about the death of her brother Eteocles and Polynices and the unfairness of the king Creon. The conflict between Antigone and Creon starts when Antigone’s brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, kill each other in a battle. Since Polynices violated the laws, Creon orders that anyone who tries to bury Polynices will be stoned to death. When Antigone tries to convince her sister to help her burry Polynices, Ismene tells her sister that should obey Creon because she is a women and that women are supposed to be weak. Antigone does not denies it and admit that she buried Polynices by saying that she was fallowing her divine law which state that burial rites should be the same for all. Even though Antigone is engaged Creon’s son Haemon, Creon believes that Antigone disobeyed his orders and should be banished. Creon tries to punish Antigone by bring her sister Isemene and accuse her of helping her sister bury her brother. Ismene wants to die with her only family left and lies admitting to helping Antigone. The story of Antigone is similar to people today who believed that sometimes a person has to break the law to fellow god. Society today judges people on what’s right or wrong based on rules or laws that were passed by a ruler or generation. Today society fellows rules just because everyone is following them or because the higher power told them to it. For example, on TV, when an actor is shown on TV smoking or using drugs to show that he/she look cool. Kids and teens fallow them to be like them and don’t care if it is right or wrong. The other similar problem that still in society is women rights. In the story Antigone action was seen as a crime by Creon, but when Tiresias told him that burying Polynices was the right thing to do he listened to him. Women in today society get discriminated in the workplace based on gender. That a women cannot be ruler or a boss at work, that only men can be in that position. Women still viewed weak in some countries, that a women should an assistant and not a
