Divided States Of America Analysis

Improved Essays
The great minds of PBS documentary workers made the film Divided States of America and published it on TV for viewers to watch January 16 and 17 in 2017. This documentary covers a drastic period of time in America, from the rise of Obama to the rise of Trump. It gives very detailed information about Obama’s time in office and what went his way, and what didn’t go his way. The events Obama faces in this documentary are breathtaking, frankly I barely even knew of any the events that he had to face and the mountains he had to climb to remain president of our country for eight strong years. I agree with practically everything Obama had put into effect or resolved, especially being the first African American president of the United States. Obama …show more content…
What was becoming an uproar in America was innocent people being shot. But not just an ordinary person, african american. When Obama was put into office, african americans all over America thought they had their savior for these terrible incidents and it would all change. Then a shooting of an innocent teenager named Trayvon Martin happened. He was walking along a sidewalk when a neighborhood watchman shot the innocent kid and killed him instantly. It took the nation by storm and african americans that were relying on Obama to help them were waiting for their thought to be hero to make the decisions they thought to be coming. They were wrong when Obama couldn’t do much about the situation. He had to side with the law enforcement as he had no choice, but as an african american himself couldn’t act like the incident wasn’t a hate crime. If he sided with a certain side he could easily get into trouble with the wrong group of people. So when faced with the incident from a question by the press, he stayed neutral and didn’t side with either law enforcement or the african american people that were wanting his help. Why didn’t Obama send the neighborhood watchman to jail for murder? Why didn’t he state that it was just an act of self defense for the watchman? He couldn’t as the President of the United States. A few months later another incident took the nation by storm called the Ferguson shooting that took place in Missouri. The 18 year-old kid named Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in the streets of Ferguson. Obama didn’t speak about the problem until nearly a month later in a press conference was faced with the question on where he stands on the incident and what he thinks of it all. Obama again couldn’t side with either the black community or law enforcement. So again he stayed neutral on the situation saying that it was just a misunderstood action taken by the police officer.

On August 9th, 2014, Michael Brown, a black man, was shot and killed by a white police officer named Darren Wilson. Witnesses accounts differ on whether or not the shooting was justified, but the evidence collected from the interior of Officer Wilson’s patrol car, from the street where the shooting took place, as well as the multiple autopsies suggested that the shooting did, in fact, concur with Officer Wilson’s version of events (1), and a grand jury chose not to proceed with charges against Wilson. Protests had begun in the hours after the shooting, as the story spread of the white police officer gunning down an unarmed black man, inflaming years of racial tensions that had been festering in Ferguson and around the country. In Ferguson in particular, the majority black population (67% of Ferguson residents) were being policed by a…

In the Michael Brown killing, police couldn’t stick to one story about what provoked the office into shooting Michael Brown. “The story changed: that Brown was portrayed as a bad kid who may have stolen cigars from a shop. Then footage emerged apparently showing him paying for the cigars” (Penny 24). After the shooting of Michael Brown occurred police protected Officer Darren Wilson was told by police to not talk to any media, and they justified his actions. “First, they (police) claimed that Brown had attacked the office who shot him” (Penny 24).…

On August 9, 2015, a black man, Michael Brown, was caught robbing a convenience store in Ferguson, Missouri. When police reached his location, Officer Darren Wilson stated that Michael Brown assaulted him and reached for the police officers gun, so the officer shot and killed the black teenager. People throughout the town automatically assumed the officer shot because he was a racist, when it was just an act of self-defense. Following the death of Brown, his family attempted to press vast amounts of charges on the officer and police department, and when they didn’t go through, blacks throughout the town rioted, throwing tear gas, handheld exploding devices, and shooting firearms in response to the killing of Brown resulting in thirteen people having major injuries and no deaths the night of the violence. As the riot progressed, the final count was twenty-one people seriously injured, two dying of shrapnel from the fight, and twenty-five buildings looted and burnt to the…

Fear of a Black President In reading the article “Fear of a Black President” a thought which kept popping into my head was how I felt that Barack Obama was under more pressure and scrutinized than any other president in the recent past. I think that for him and for other African Americans, whether they agree with his views or not, Obama being elected president was an epic event. From a historical perspective it was a monumental day in United States history, an event that will written about for ages. Taking on the presidency is a great responsibility, but as the saying goes “with great power comes great responsibility.…
