A Separate Peace fits into several categories. First it is a coming of age novel because it focuses on the growth of the protagonist (Gene) from youth to adulthood. In the beginning of the book we see Gene now as an adult visiting the school grounds and remembering, then he begins to flash back starting with the summer session which is where he met Phineas. The rest of the book is all Gene’s memories. It continues through the entire summer session, the fall semester, and the spring semester and it ends with graduation.…

In chapter 1 of A Separate Peace, the narrator, whom has yet to be named, begins telling of when he last visited his school of his high school years, which happened to be during World War II. It had been fifteen years since his last appearance. On his trip of touring the school for the first time since his departure, he had wanted to see two specific places. One of these places turns out to be a tree near the edge of a river, where he and his friends, more specifically his best friend, Phineas or “Finny”, would jump from into the water below. As the narrator stands at the tree he remembers one particular summer night in 1942, in which he and Phineas had jumped from the tree for the very first time.…

The book, “Divided We Fall”, is very political and deals with social problems that would involve people to be tolerant. In the book there are many who are not tolerant and who won’t assimilate in the situation they’re in. I think the author meant to show many others not being tolerant or assimilative in order to show that these are good traits to have. The people protesting in Boise were certainly not tolerant to the Governor’s opposing views and that did not end well for them.…

A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…
