Diversity Project Reflection

Coming into this class I really don’t know what I was getting myself into. I knew it was going to teach me different forms of diversity and how to act in certain situations. This class would also prepare me for the future. I was overwhelmed when I was thinking about this project earlier in the semester. This was by far my favorite project from this class. I was able to interact with others during this project and it was amazing. I could see the divides in our society. The first clinical that I had done was the week after I knew about this project. For this clinical, I went home to my summer camp (since it was still summer). At my camp, we have many kids coming from different backgrounds. My favorite part of this camp is the inclusion camp. In this part of the camp we have about twenty children ranging from the K-12th grade that have minor disabilities but, the disabilities also ranged. Since I have worked at this camp for six years. I noticed that the people who attended this dance really seemed like they had the emotional and spiritual resources even when they didn’t have the physical resources. But, unlike the world outside of the recreation walls, everyone was very welcoming so I found it hard to find the diversity this time around. In my future classroom, I will need to keep in mind that everyone can do anything they put their mind to. I shouldn’t just assume that one person can’t do an activity because of their disability or lack of resource. With that being said, I also want to help any student that may lack a resource if I can because I don’t want them to feel out of place because they might not have the same support as another student. Overall, this was my favorite event that I was apart of and I plan on continuing it throughout the rest of my college

    I think Washburn values diversity because having diversity at a university presents all kinds of thinking and reasoning strategies from different types of students. Also, there are more ways to come up with results and solutions when there is a diverse setting containing students from different backgrounds.
